Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Alabama teaching certificate in special education.
  • Meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with a wide variety of people.
  • Ability to develop and implement curriculum for assigned students.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, plan and provide instruction, manage data, and prepare reports.
  • Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, assist with toileting and hygiene needs.
  • Ability to transfer, feed students, and provide physical intervention when required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Punctual and regular attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its goals.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of child development and special education characteristics.
  • Implements prescribed curriculum and best instructional practices.
  • Participates in development of students’ IEPs as an IEP team member.
  • Implements students’ IEPs and schedules IEP meetings.
  • Uses a variety of instructional strategies aligned to student needs.
  • Monitors student participation and collaborates with teachers to support progress.
  • Uses technology to plan, deliver instruction, and facilitate learning.
  • Models and integrates technology in classroom instruction and assessment.
  • Maintains supervision for a safe learning environment.
  • Assists in behavior management and crisis intervention per policy.
  • Collaborates with staff and parents to maximize student achievement.
  • Develops long-range instructional plans and objectives.
  • Sets goals for daily, weekly and long-range lessons.
  • Adapts materials to meet special needs and objectives.
  • Maintains organized learning environments and manages time effectively.
  • Interprets data to drive diagnostic and instructional decisions.
  • Communicates student progress to parents and colleagues clearly.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student/school/workplace matters.
  • Participates in state-approved evaluation programs and school committees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by principal or supervisor.
