Job summary

Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) invites law graduates and experienced attorneys to join the Fall 2027 class of the detained removal defense team in the Immigration Practice. Lateral attorneys may begin earlier.

BDS is a public defense office serving low-income New Yorkers across criminal, family, immigration, and civil areas. The team focuses on detained and non-detained removal proceedings, with opportunities to work on complex applications, appeals, and collaborations across departments.

Qualifications

• JD degree anticipated by start date September 2027.
• Admitted to a state bar or have taken first available bar exam after graduation.
• Strong desire to advocate for noncitizens facing detention and deportation.
• Ability to communicate with varied backgrounds and experiences.
• Excellent research, writing, and advocacy skills.

Responsibilities

• Attend training in Fall 2027 (or as a lateral hire).
• Provide comprehensive representation in detained and non-detained removal proceedings and appeals.
• Litigate issues including detention, removability, and relief eligibility.
• Appear in immigration court and in person when required.
• Meet with detained clients in person at immigration jails.
• Manage a demanding caseload with tight deadlines.
• Conduct complex legal research and writing on removability, relief, and appellate issues.
• File applications for immigration benefits and respond to requests for evidence.
• Collaborate with supervisors, social workers, paralegals, and staff to develop cases.
• Coordinate with other departments on legal strategy and client needs.
• Maintain case files and notes in case management systems.
