Job summary

Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) is hiring an Entry Level Staff Attorney for the Family Defense Practice in Brooklyn, NY. This full-time position targets rising 3Ls, judicial clerks, and recent graduates for Fall 2027, with a salary of $99,000 annually.

Under supervision, you will work with interdisciplinary teams to represent parents facing removal in Brooklyn Family Court, including hearings, appeals, and collaboration with other practice areas to ensure holistic services.

Qualifications

• JD anticipated by September 2027 start date.
• Have taken the first NY bar exam after graduation.
• Desire to advocate for families facing separation.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with interdisciplinary staff and under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Attend Fall 2027 training program.
• Develop caseload to provide comprehensive representation for parents/caretakers in Brooklyn Family Court.
• Collaborate with social workers and paralegals to advance client interests.
• Litigate hearings and trials in Family Court, including emergency hearings.
• Prepare and argue motions for visitation, reunification, and other client goals.
• Coordinate with other BDS practice areas to deliver holistic services.
