Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) Immigration NYIFUP team in Brooklyn, NY, seeks an attorney to represent clients in detained and non-detained removal proceedings, appeals, and related immigration matters. The role involves complex research, writing, and collaborations with attorneys, social workers, and clerical staff.

The position is part of a large, public defense office serving low-income New Yorkers, with a focus on housing, benefits, education, and employment issues alongside immigration

Formación

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree anticipated by September 2027.
• Admitted to a state bar or have taken the first available state bar exam after graduation.
• Strong desire to advocate on behalf of noncitizens facing detention and deportation.
• Ability to communicate with diverse clients and colleagues.

Responsabilidades

• Attend training program in Fall 2027 or as needed.
• Provide comprehensive representation in detained and non-detained removal proceedings and appeals.
• Litigate issues including detention, removability, and relief eligibility.
• Make regular appearances in immigration court and meet detained clients in person.
• Navigate a demanding caseload with short deadlines and evolving schedules.
• Conduct legal research and writing on removability, relief, and appellate issues.
• File applications with USCIS, respond to RFEs, attend interviews, and file appeals.
• Collaborate with supervisors, social workers, and staff to develop cases and build trust with clients.
• Coordinate with other departments on overall legal strategy and client needs.
• Maintain case files and data in accordance with regulations.
