Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) operates the Nevada National Security Site, focusing on national security through high-hazard experimentation and engineering services. They are seeking a Senior Scientist to develop mathematical models for analyzing experimental data in support of the Stockpile Stewardship mission, while also maintaining an active research portfolio and collaborating with various teams.

Responsibilities:

• Demonstrate the ability to implement emerging capabilities for image and signal processing, such as machine learning, Bayesian reconstruction techniques, and inverse problems.

• Apply mathematical solutions to diagnostics systems on high stake weapons physics experiments conducted at the Principal Underground Laboratory for Subcritical Experimentation (PULSE) Complex and other facilities located at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS).

• Employ independent judgment and apply knowledge to ensure that requirements are completed using quality methods.

• Serve as a technical subject matter expert and mentor to junior team members.

• Collaborate with peers and other disciplines to coordinate project execution compliance.

• Alone or as a member of a team, participate in researching, extracting, analyzing and compiling technical data.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.

• Manage multiple tasks, changing priorities, and apply leadership concepts with an emphasis on continuous improvement and team building.

• Establish and maintain strong and effective customer relations, anticipate change and adjust promptly and effectively.

Qualifications:

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in calculus-based technical (STEM) field plus at least 5 years relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge. Graduate research experience may be recognized.

• Possess knowledge of the science and mathematics of image and signal processing techniques and reconstruction methods, including experience with algorithms for deterministic and statistical inverse problems, such as Bayesian models, uncertainty quantification, and machine learning.

• Proficiency in relevant programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, and/or R for data manipulation, algorithm development, and custom analysis routines.

• Experience with large-scale data management, cloud computing environments, or high-performance computing (HPC) for processing extensive interferometric datasets.

• Skilled in visualizing complex datasets and communicating technical findings clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.

• Ability to develop and implement robust data quality control procedures and assess sources of error and uncertainty.

• Employ independent judgment and apply knowledge to ensure that requirements are completed using quality methods.

• Ability to work within an underground facility.

• Ability to work under minimal supervision on a dynamic multidisciplinary project with simultaneous commitments to performance, cost, and schedule.

• Possess a strong work ethic, be motivated to succeed, and be a self-starter.

• A Department of Energy Q Clearance is required (position will be cleared to this level).

• The primary work location will be North Las Vegas, NV. Work at the NNSS may be required in support of these functions, as well as travel to NNSS remote sites, and the three National Security Laboratories.

• Work schedule for this position will be 4/10’s, Monday - Thursday (subject to change).

• Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

• Must possess a valid driver's license.

Preferred:

• a PhD in calculus-based Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or Statistics (STEM) field is required to be completed at the time of employment.
