The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) is looking for Teaching Assistants for its summer PreCollege Art and Design Program. TAs will assist faculty in delivering high-quality instruction, overseeing studio time, and ensuring a welcoming environment for students. Applicants must be current undergraduate students at MICA with at least a 2.5 GPA. The role offers 20-40 hours per week at $15 per hour, with optional housing and meals provided during the program.

General purpose: MICA’s summer PreCollege Art and Design Program is a 2- 4 week intensive college-level experience designed to help participants make the leap from thinking like a high school art student to thinking like an artist making art that reflects a new level of skill and personal vision, communicating ideas about art in daily critiques, and building a professional portfolio of work. PreCollege is designed for rising juniors and seniors. In conjunction with MICA’s Mission and Vision, our program provides a welcoming environment for all, and values students of all races and ethnicities, sexual orientations and expressions, creative abilities, religious faiths, political affiliations, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Teaching Assistants (TAs) assist faculty and staff in modeling and facilitating a healthy, welcoming community within the classroom. TAs work with a MICA Faculty member to provide high quality instruction to PreCollege students and introduce them to skills and techniques within their area of expertise.

2026 Program Dates: Move In: June 30-July 1, 2026. Training: July 6-July 10. Program Starts: July 12. Program Ends: August 8. Final Clean-up: August 8-11.

Summary of Essential Functions Assist faculty with instructional implementation, demonstrations, critique, and student support. Supervise required studio time outside of class in collaboration with faculty and staff. Assist with the successful implementation of the PreCollege academic programming. The variety of tasks associated with this position involve administrative, clerical, physical, organizational and leadership skills.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Work directly with a faculty member to support their course for the duration of the program. Assist in planning academic content for field trips and on-location logistics. Supervise students and model, implement and enforce PreCollege program policies, rules, and regulations. Work with Pro Staff and PreCollege Faculty to ensure a safe and positive academic experience for students. Facilitate and encourage students to develop and maintain healthy interpersonal relationships, personal wellness, and providing support and guidance as needed. Provide support, interventions, and referrals when appropriate for individual student needs. Model and enforce PreCollege program policies, rules, and regulations and act as an ambassador for the program. Perform other related duties as assigned such as supervising students on weekend field trips and off campus locations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to maintain excellent and mature judgment. Excellent written, verbal and oral communication skills. Knowledge of art and design processes and disciplines. Knowledge of MICA’s campus, equipment and resources. Ability to manage others, provide leadership and guidance as necessary. Ability to assess student work and experiences in order to provide coaching and feedback to students in order to maintain program standards and strengthen the program quality and experience. Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with efficiency and accuracy. Consistently be able to implement program policies and regulations while serving as a role model of appropriate behavior.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be a currently enrolled MICA Undergraduate student at time of employment. Must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5. Must be in good conduct standing with the college. Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in working with youth in a formal job setting or volunteer role.

Compensation: 20-40 hours per week, $15 per hour. Housing is provided (optional for TA’s), meals provided while on shift for in‑person program.

Conditions of Employment: CJIS Fingerprint and background check. Available evenings and weekends. Availability for the dates above. Cannot hold other positions on campus for the duration of the program due to student employees being limited to 40 hours per week in the summer and demanding nature of the role. This position is contingent upon participant enrollment in the PreCollege program.
