Job summary

RWJBarnabas Health seeks a Unit Secretary for Jersey City Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit. This per diem, evening-shift role supports the nursing team and ensures a welcoming, organized environment for patients and families.

The unit secretary coordinates calls, admissions, and documentation, while maintaining accurate records in the EMR system. The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, strong communication and computer skills, and prior clerical or hospital office

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; clerical/administrative/customer service experience preferred.
• Strong communication, organizational, multitasking, and computer skills essential.
• Experience as Unit Clerk/Unit Secretary or in hospital/medical office settings preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, electronic medical records, physician order entry, and healthcare documentation preferred.

Responsibilities

• Greet patients, families, visitors, and physicians while delivering excellent customer service.
• Answer telephones, call bells, and intercoms; direct requests to the appropriate team.
• Coordinate admissions, transfers, and discharges; maintain accurate patient information.
• Enter physician orders and update patient records in electronic medical record systems.
• Prepare, organize, and maintain unit reports and documentation.
• Support daily nursing station operations by maintaining supplies and orderly environment.
• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and the healthcare team to ensure efficient workflows.
