  • Arizona Registered Geologist (RG) or pursuing certification is a plus
  • Strong knowledge of groundwater permitting and regulatory frameworks is expected
  • Experience with well construction, aquifer testing, and field data analysis is desirable
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills required

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary team for GIS, modeling, and data analysis
  • Organize, evaluate, and analyze hydrogeologic data from fieldwork and public datasets
  • Analyze aquifer test data, water level data, and lab analyses for reports
  • Assist in development of hydrogeologic models and geospatial data visualization

Hydrogeologist – Water Resource and Permitting

Location: Phoenix, AZ

Experience Level: Early to Mid-Career (2 – 6 years of experience)

Compensation: $33 - $45 hourly (negotiable based on experience)

About The Role

Spheros Environmental is seeking a Hydrogeologist – Water Resource and Permitting to support our expanding groundwater supply and management projects in Arizona and beyond. This position is ideal for someone who is technically curious, detail‑oriented, and passionate about developing and protecting water resources. The successful candidate will work on a variety of projects involving permitting and development of groundwater resources, including water supply wells, groundwater recharge, aquifer storage and recovery (ASR), underground storage facilities (USF), aquifer protection programs (APP), conceptual model development, and technical reporting.

What You’ll Do

As a Hydrogeologist, you’ll contribute to the technical execution of groundwater projects, including permitting, data analysis, and reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Collaboration: Coordinate with a multidisciplinary team including colleagues, engineering partners, subcontractors, laboratories, clients, and regulators in developing and analyzing GIS, modeling, and hydrologic data.
  • Data Management: Organize, evaluate, and analyze hydrogeologic data from fieldwork and public datasets.
  • Field Data Analysis: Analyze data collected in the field, including aquifer test data, water level data, lab analyses of groundwater, surface water, and soil samples.
  • Technical Analysis: Assist in the development of hydrogeologic conceptual models and groundwater modeling efforts. Work with team on displaying and organizing geospatial information to support project goals.
  • Reporting: Contribute to technical reports and documentation for clients and regulatory agencies, and work to ensure end-products comply with statutory requirements.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Education

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or higher in geology, hydrogeology, environmental/earth science, or a related field (required)

Experience

2 – 6 years of direct experience in hydrogeology, water resources, or environmental consulting

Licensure

Arizona Registered Geologist (RG) or interest in pursuing certification is a plus

Technical Skills

  • Well construction and aquifer testing procedures
  • GIS, AQTESOLV, Leapfrog, Petra, MODFLOW
  • Aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) projects
  • Arizona groundwater and surface water regulation framework
  • State and Federal permitting requirements including Underground Storage Facility (USF) and Aquifer Protection Program (APP)
  • Strong organizational, communication, and technical writing skills
  • Computer coding skills (e.g. Python) a plus

Other Requirements

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license with a good driving record
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for onsite meetings at project sites across Arizona and the surrounding region
