Job summary

MnDOT seeks a Hydraulics Support Engineer to deliver statewide technical expertise in hydrology, hydraulic design, asset management, and ORD drainage tools. Responsible for CAD design support to district hydraulic designers and analysis of drainage assets and data management.

Role requires FE or PE path, ABET degree, and experience in hydraulics and data analysis, with strong ability to guide others and share hydraulic knowledge across the department.

Qualifications

  • PE license required for Engineer Senior; hydraulics and hydrology experience desired.
  • ABET-accredited civil engineering degree or higher required (Engineer 2 Graduate path).
  • FE exam passed required for Engineer 2 Graduate path.

Responsibilities

  • Provide statewide technical expertise in hydraulics, hydrology, and ORD drainage tools.
  • Offer hydraulic technical assistance and CAD design support to district hydraulic designers.
  • Prepare analyses and guidance on drainage assets and data management.
  • Support department-wide hydraulic knowledge sharing and standards coordination with State Aid divisions.

Job description

As a Hydraulics Support Engineer, you will provide statewide technical expertise in hydrology, hydraulic design, hydraulic asset management, infrastructure data support, and related technologies, including Open Roads Designer (ORD) drainage tools. Additional responsibilities include providing hydraulic technical assistance and CADD design support to district hydraulic designers; preparing technical analysis and guidance related to drainage assets and database management; supporting the development, improvement, and sharing of hydraulic knowledge across the department; and coordinating with State Aid Bridge and State Aid Operations on hydraulic related activities and standards.

This vacancy is being announced at two different job classes at the same time, Engineer Senior and Engineer 2 Graduate. The final class and starting salary are dependent on the successful applicant’s qualifications.

Engineer Senior Minimum Qualifications:
  • Licensure as a professional engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience, and Interior Design (AELSLAGID).
  • Experience in hydraulics and hydrology.
  • Experience in analysing and preparing engineering data.
  • Experience providing technical guidance and support to others.
  • Experience using CADD for hydraulic design.
Engineer 2 Graduate Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university AND two years of post-graduation civil engineering work
  • OR
  • A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college/university or equivalent AND one year of post-graduation civil engineering work.

AND

  • A passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Experience in hydraulics and hydrology.
  • Experience analysing and preparing engineering data.
  • Experience providing technical information to others.
  • Experience using CADD.
