Job summary

Workers' Compensation Board in Lewiston seeks an attorney advocate to provide legal services for injured workers. You will advise, consult, and represent clients before administrative bodies, prepare appellate materials, and work under limited supervision.

The role requires admission to Maine bar, strong knowledge of workers' compensation law, and ability to manage cases from investigation through settlement. Hybrid telework is available after probation with state authorization.

Qualifications

• Admission to the practice of law in Maine or eligible with 12-month admittance
• Knowledge of Maine administrative procedures and workers' compensation rules
• Ability to advise and advocate for injured workers in hearings and appeals
• Experience with depositions, briefs, and appellate practice

Responsibilities

• Represent injured workers in administrative hearings to provide legal services and representation
• Analyze case information and documents to advocate for workers
• Counsel and advise injured workers to protect their legal rights
• Explain laws, timelines, and risks to educate workers about their rights
• Negotiate with insurers, employers, and providers to protect workers' rights
• Draft memoranda and briefs for litigation and administrative proceedings
• Explain board procedures and processes to injured workers
• Determine scope of investigation to ensure timely, comprehensive services
• Negotiate settlements to reduce litigation in the administrative system
• Assist in rehabilitation and return-to-work services for workers
• Take depositions of treating physicians and others involved in the case
• Prepare cases for appellate review before the Law Court
• Review findings in mediation or hearings to ensure legal compliance
• Coordinate legal services with senior staff for consistency
