Job summary

The City of Minneapolis is seeking a Utility Billing Specialist to assist customers with billing inquiries, payments, service requests, and billing concerns, delivering courteous service and accurate records. You will process transactions, explain billing policies, and resolve account discrepancies while coordinating with other City departments to ensure timely utility billing.

This hybrid role offers indoor office work with some days in the office and some remote.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 3 years progressive experience with at least 2 years in a related billing role.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Resume not required, but encouraged.

Responsibilities

• Provide accurate, timely customer service via phone, email, in-person, and online.
• Handle difficult situations with tact and professionalism.
• Investigate and resolve inquiries related to water, sewer, solid waste, recycling, and stormwater billing.
• Explain charges on utility bills and how they are incurred.
• Set up payment plans for past-due balances in line with City policies.
• Process mailed-in payments and related cashiering functions, refunds as needed.
• Review accounts for debits and credits and explain findings to customers.
• Coordinate with Public Works and other departments to verify upcoming service work.
• Assist customers in navigating online portals and accessing City resources.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
