Job summary

WSP is seeking a Substation Specialist Electrical Designer to join the Columbus/New Albany, Ohio team. The role offers on-site or hybrid work, depending on location and business needs, and involves providing technical design and CADD support for utility-scale projects.

You will produce P&C drawing packages, technical memos, and material lists, ensuring quality that meets industry standards. Travel to client sites may be required as projects progress.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma.
• Minimum of 7 years of relevant post-education experience in discipline with prior drafting and design support experience.
• Knowledge of design support principles, practices, process, methods and techniques.
• Knowledge and understanding of substation protection schemes / concepts, protection applications, and electrical utility protection standards and practices.
• Knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
• Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving geometry and mathematics; understanding plans and specs.
• Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with technical and non-technical audiences.
• Competent self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet objectives.
• Analytical mindset to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations.
• Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, math principles, spreadsheets and tools.
• Capable critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge.
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to policies.
• Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
• Occasional travel may be required.

Responsibilities

• Produce design and CADD support for moderate-scale projects in utilities.
• Generate P&C drawing packages, technical memos, details, specifications, and material lists.
• Ensure deliverables meet industry standards for design, accuracy and functionality.
• Prepare AC/DC and wiring diagrams, bills of materials, and related documents.
• Verify calculations and interpret contract plans; escalate discrepancies.
• Collaborate with cross-discipline teams and ensure compliance with standards.
