Job summary

FHWA seeks a Strategic Communications Outreach Specialist to lead stakeholder engagement and outreach for research programs. The role is Hybrid with work across Washington, DC and McLean, VA, including occasional CONUS travel to conferences and events.

The ideal candidate has 6+ years in communications, strong writing skills, and experience shaping messages for diverse audiences across digital and print channels. Monday–Friday hours with event support flexibility.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Communications, Marketing, PR, Journalism, or related field.
• Minimum 6 years of professional experience in communications, public affairs, marketing, or outreach.
• Experience developing and implementing strategic communications plans and outreach campaigns.
• Strong writing, editing, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Experience creating content for digital, print, web, email, and social media channels.
• Experience conducting audience research, communications assessments, or campaign evaluations.
• Experience managing multiple projects and deadlines.
• Ability to translate complex technical information into clear, engaging content.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute strategic communications and stakeholder outreach plans.
• Lead integrated campaigns across digital, print, web, email, and social media.
• Create messaging and campaign content for diverse audiences.
• Support readership and engagement for FHWA publications and products.
• Develop content for websites, newsletters, social media, and presentations.
• Analyze audience data and campaign performance to improve impact.
• Coordinate outreach for conferences, events, and stakeholder meetings.
• Collaborate with editors, writers, designers, and government stakeholders.
