Job summary

Flatiron Crane is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for a hybrid role in Salem, OH. You will design, test, and iterate mechanical systems using CAD tools, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver safe, reliable solutions.

The role requires a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering (Master’s preferred for some roles) and strong problem‑solving, communication, and hands-on skills. A PE license is a plus; travel across the Midwest is expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Master’s degree preferred for select roles.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus, but not required.
  • Proficiency in CAD software such as CREO, AutoCAD, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical systems, components, and products using CAD software and engineering tools.
  • Perform calculations, simulations, and analyses to validate designs and ensure safety, reliability, and performance standards.
  • Produce technical drawings, specifications, repair procedures, and documentation for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and project teams to support production, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Conduct prototype testing, collect data, and evaluate product performance.
  • Research new materials, methods, and technologies to enhance product performance and efficiency.
  • Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with company and industry standards.

Job Summary:

The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical systems, components, and equipment. This role requires strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative, cost-effective, and high-quality solutions.

Job Responsibilities:

Position Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and materials science

  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude; familiar with manual and power hand tools
  • Skilled in data collection using micrometers, calipers, and measuring tape
  • Comfortable working at heights and physically capable of operating scissors lifts and boom lifts
  • Willingness to travel throughout the Midwest region
