Overview

Automatic Handling International, Inc. is seeking a highly experienced mechanical engineer to lead complex mechanical design and modification projects. This role requires deep technical expertise, proven leadership, and the ability to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant operations. The selected candidate will act as a lead engineer for assigned projects, providing full lifecycle engineering oversight from conceptual design through implementation, testing, and turnover. Projects will involve mechanical systems, components, and technical support during installation.

Key responsibilities
  • Lead the design, modification and maintenance of the equipment in compliance with industry codes and ASME standards.
  • Develop designs, both conceptual and production, and technical specifications.
  • Coordinate and collaborate design review efforts with vendors, customers, and internal project teams.
  • Perform field walk-throughs, site visits, resolve conflicts, and verify existing conditions.
  • Ensure adherence to schedules, with flexibility to support off-hours project implementation when necessary.
  • Exhibit sound engineering judgement, mentoring junior engineers, and guiding project teams.
  • Design custom machines utilizing SolidWorks 3D CAD software.
  • Design mechanical drive systems employing a variety of motor technologies.
  • Possess familiarity with industry practices related to drive system design and fabrication methods including laser and water-jet cutting, machining, welding, and heat treatment.
Basic qualifications
  • BSME (mechanical engineering) or equivalent technical degree with relevant mechanical design experience.
  • 8+ years of machine design experience.
  • Strong technical communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment.
  • Demonstrate skills in researching design issues, evaluating alternatives, and making sound engineering recommendations.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks 3D modeling software.
  • AutoCAD 2D.
  • Understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Understanding of GD&T.
Preferred qualifications
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks Simulation software.
  • Proficiency in Navisworks software.
  • Proficiency in hydraulic systems.
  • Proficiency in pneumatic systems.
Work environment
  • Primarily office based with periodic field presence.
  • Industrial facility setting requiring PPE (hard hat, steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, and ear protection).
  • Freedom to walk the shop floor and interact with shop personnel as machines are being constructed.
