Job summary

The Hanover Insurance Group in Worcester, MA (also Howell, MI) is seeking an Underwriting Manager for our Personal Lines team. This full-time exempt role offers a hybrid work model and broad leadership responsibilities to guide underwriting staff.

Under limited supervision, you will supervise underwriting activities, build agency relationships, review complex cases, ensure policy adherence, and collaborate with field leadership to meet performance goals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with 3 to 6 years underwriting experience. Prior supervisory or team lead experience preferred.
• Able to understand and articulate Personal Lines underwriting in a way

Responsibilities

• Supervises the underwriting function to ensure timely decision making, proper risk selection, pricing, and monitoring of business.
• Reviews complex underwriting inquiries and approves risks beyond the authority of staff.
• Manages agency relationships and collaborates with field marketing to resolve service issues.
• Attends weekly/monthly calls with field and senior leadership and oversees customer inquiries.
• Demonstrates negotiation skills with internal and external customers.
• Ensures adherence to underwriting policies, guidelines, and procedures.
• Assesses demand and aligns resources across Personal Lines Underwriting to meet performance objectives.
• Develops team members and communicates goals; participates in performance reviews and employment actions as needed.
• Develops risk management plans locally and assists countrywide implementation.
• May serve on project teams and motivate the team to support initiatives.
