Job summary

UMass Amherst seeks a Human Resources Business Partner I to support the College of Natural Sciences HR operations and strategy. You will advise on personnel policies, manage HR processes, and partner with CNS managers to improve staffing and performance.

As part of a hybrid work arrangement, you will collaborate with CNS faculty and staff, provide guidance on classification, onboarding, leave, and employee relations, and leverage HRIS and ATS tools to ensure compliant, timely actions.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or bachelor’s degree with HR experience.
• Ability to problem-solve, manage multiple tasks, and prioritize.
• Strong service orientation and customer-focused problem solving.
• Commitment to inclusion and understanding of diverse perspectives.
• Excellent written and oral communication, including training skills.
• Proficiency with spreadsheets, word processing, calendars and org charts.
• Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities

• Provide direction and leadership to HR staff for accurate HR processes.
• Engage with CNS faculty and staff to administer HR activities across the unit.
• Manage hiring, promotion, transfer, tenure, and reappointment processes.
• Develop clear, accurate position descriptions with managers.
• Review staff classification requests and advise on compensation processes.
• Facilitate and monitor leave processes with leadership guidance.
• Guide employee evaluation processes and drive performance engagement.
• Support senior HR staff in resolving performance concerns.
• Process and approve HR actions in HRIS/ATS and other systems.
• Create queries and reports to support HR management.
• Collaborate to update knowledge-based resources and improve processes.
