Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is seeking a Geologist/Hydrogeologist (NS) to serve as a Project Manager in the Waste Management division. The role manages stewardship of closed sites across NC, reviews geological reports, and ensures post-closure compliance to protect public health and the environment.

Travel to project locations within North Carolina is required. A bachelor’s degree in geology or related field is required, with licensure as a Professional Geologist

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in geology, geosciences, physical science or related field, or engineering with 30 credit hours of geological science coursework.
• Some positions may require licensure as a Professional Geologist by the NC Board for the Licensing of Geologists, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical oversight and evaluate land use to protect public health and the environment when redeveloping properties.
• Review complex geological/hydrogeological reports, plans, and designs to ensure safe handling of contamination.
• Conduct risk assessments applying geologic principles to ensure safe redevelopment and vapor intrusion risk evaluations.
• Present and communicate technical information to stakeholders and guide environmental assessment and risk evaluations.
