Job summary

CDM Smith is seeking a Fire Protection Engineer to design and review fire protection systems and life-safety engineering for federal and commercial projects. The role includes evaluating designs, ensuring compliance with NFPA, UFC, and local codes, and collaborating across teams to deliver robust protection solutions.

The position offers a hybrid work model with potential office bases across multiple states, and opportunities for mentoring and leading junior engineers.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Architectural or Chemical Engineering, or in Engineering Technology or related discipline.
• Professional engineering (PE) license.
• 7 years of related experience.
• Domestic and/or international travel may be required.

Responsibilities

• Develop comprehensive fire protection engineering designs including layouts, basis-of-design, water supply analyses, and detailed plans for sprinkler and suppression systems.
• Act as QFPE for work with federal projects, providing life safety, fire suppression and fire alarm analysis.
• Review draft designs for compliance with federal, state and local regulations and sign off on completed designs.
• Perform other duties of basic to high complexity to meet client requirements such as egress analysis and fire hazard analysis.
• Evaluate systems using HydraCAD, HydraCALC, or similar software.
• Ensure designs comply with NFPA, UFC, and local regulations and firm policies.
• Collaborate with sales staff to create proposals and review drafts for regulatory adherence.
• Meet with clients to review current and future design needs.
• Conduct site assessments and studies to align designs with industry standards.
• Attend conferences to improve visibility of CDM Smith’s products and services.
• Provide technical guidance and training to junior staff; may supervise engineers on projects.
