Job summary

Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago seeks a Director of Engagement to lead our efforts to move newcomers into meaningful participation, service, and leadership. You will shape an integrated pathway, coordinate across ministries, and supervise the Director of Volunteer Ministry while partnering with pastors, staff, and lay leaders to foster a hospitable, diverse community.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in theology, divinity, nonprofit management, organizational leadership, social work, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• At least five years of leadership in congregational life, nonprofit engagement, membership development, or volunteer management.
• Experience developing systems that move people from initial interest to sustained participation.
• Experience supervising staff and setting measurable goals.
• Proven success recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers.
• Strong relationship-building across generations, cultures, and church life.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong organizational and project-management abilities; manage multiple programs and deadlines.
• Commitment to the mission and inclusive Christian witness of Fourth Presbyterian Church.

Responsibilities

• Oversee systems that ensure visitors and prospective members receive timely follow-up.
• Strengthen welcoming, orienting, and integrating newcomers into worship and service.
• Plan membership exploration, new-member welcome, and relationship-building after membership.
• Create opportunities for newcomers to meet staff and ministry representatives.
