Whitley Penn, a leading national public accounting firm, seeks an Assistant Controller to join our Oil & Gas Upstream team in Houston. You will develop and oversee tools, systems, and processes for upstream accounting clients, aligning with firm standards.

This role demands advanced technical accounting skills and strong supervisory abilities to train associates and drive client service and growth. This position offers hybrid work with in-office days and WFH on Fridays, with opportunities to

Qualifications

• 8+ years of Oil & Gas Upstream accounting experience with lead roles.
• Experience setting up accounting functions/processes and implementation.
• Proficiency in GAAP for Oil & Gas upstream/E&P accounting and industry regs.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting; APA preferred.
• Strong communication and supervisory capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Develop tools, systems, and processes for Oil & Gas Upstream accounting clients.
• Oversee operations of the Oil and Gas Accounting group, including staff supervision.
• Design organizational structures to meet client goals and objectives.
• Set up and implement O&G Upstream accounting functions/processes.
• Develop client service plans and research technical issues for compliance.
• Ensure deliverables meet professional and firm standards.
• Manage budgets, WIP, and invoicing; monitor client relationships.
• Provide coaching, performance feedback, and professional development.
