Job summary

The City of Charlotte’s Aviation Department is seeking an experienced HVAC technician to install, repair and maintain heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for city airport facilities. You will work on specialized PC Air units that cool aircraft on the ground and provide oversight to other maintenance staff.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED with experience, or an associate degree with related work history; NC HVAC licenses (H2/H3) preferred and universal CFC

Qualifications

  • High school graduate/GED with five years' experience or associate degree and three years’ experience in a relevant work/industry/military/job specific experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties.
  • NC State HVAC H2 or H3 license preferred.
  • Read and write sufficiently to complete related paperwork and read schematic designs and blueprints.
  • Must have Universal CFC certification.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, the traveling public and tenants.

Responsibilities

  • Provide lead direction to other building maintenance workers.

Summary

General Summary: Install, repair and perform preventive maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and related systems at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Majority of work is related to highly specialized PC Air units which cool aircraft while on the ground. Perform skilled repairs and preventive maintenance to heating and air conditioning equipment, both chilled water systems and direct expansion equipment.

Education & Experience

High school graduate/GED required with five years of experience or associate degree and three years’ experience in a relevant work/industry/military/job specific experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties. NC State HVAC H2 or H3 license preferred. Performs other general maintenance work incidental to above duties, or necessary to keep buildings in working order, including basic electrical and plumbing.

  • Must have Universal CFC certification. North Carolina State Contractor’s licenses: H1, H2 or H3 preferred.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, the traveling public and tenants.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
Physical Requirements

Must be able to spend about 90% of time standing, bending, reaching, walking and driving. The rest of the time includes a combination of sitting, twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling, climbing, lifting, shoveling and carrying. Typically, would not lift or carry more than 50 lbs., however, occasional assisted lifts up to approximately 120 lbs., particularly when handling compressors.

General Information
  • Standard shift hours apply. Hours subject to change and overtime. Works assigned shift, subject to emergency call back to work during emergencies, urgent situations, special events and inclement weather.
  • Must be available for work for a rotating weekend and holiday duty schedule.
  • Valid driver’s license with no more than 6 points and ability to qualify for City driving permit.
  • Certain convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and therefore exclude from employment.
