Lone Star College-Montgomery is seeking an HVAC Technician II to install, repair, maintain, and troubleshoot campus HVAC systems, ensuring a safe, comfortable environment.

Work across LSC locations on projects, implement SOPs, maintain records, and support safety and EPA-compliance.

Requirements: high school diploma or GED, EPA 608 certification, Texas Registered Technician, and 3 years of HVAC experience; associate degree preferred.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and repairs HVAC systems including air handlers, boilers, and ventilation equipment.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance for efficiency and longevity.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions using gauges, meters, and diagnostics software.
  • Repairs or replaces defective HVAC components (compressors, motors, fans, belts, thermostats).
  • Maintains refrigeration systems including walk-ins, freezers, and ice machines; handles refrigerants per EPA rules.

Job Description
Purpose and Scope

The HVAC Technician II is responsible for the installation, repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting of heating, ventilation, and airconditioning (HVAC) systems across the community college campus. This position ensures optimal functioning of mechanical systems to provide a comfortable and safe environment for students, faculty, and staff.

This role works collaboratively across LSC campuses on special projects, recommend process improvement, and implement best practices in standard operating procedures (SOPs) across functional units.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Maintains and repairs HVAC systems, including air handlers, boilers, heat pumps, and ventilation equipment
  2. Performs routine preventative maintenance on HVAC systems to ensure efficiency and longevity
  3. Troubleshoots and diagnoses system malfunctions using tools such as gauges, meters, and software diagnostics
  4. Repairs or replaces defective HVAC components such as compressors, motors, fans, belts, and thermostats
  5. Maintains and repairs refrigeration systems, including walk-in coolers, freezers, and ice machines. Works with refrigerants in compliance with EPA regulations and maintain proper documentation
  6. Monitors and adjusts HVAC system settings, under supervision to ensure efficient operation
  7. Assists with general maintenance duties, such as electrical, plumbing, and carpentry, as required
  8. Maintains accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and work orders
  9. Ensure compliance with safety regulations, codes, and college policies
  10. Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be capable of performing labor-intensive work associated with facilities maintenance
  • Must be capable of safely operating powered equipment such as: Electrical tools and equipment, voltage meters, testing equipment, saws drills, and be able to determine which equipment to use for a particular purpose
  • Must have knowledge of chill and hot water systems, and components in a high-rise environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals.
  • Knowledge of Windows, Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, controls, and diagnostic tools
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Effective communication skills for coordinating with staff, vendors, and contractors
  • Familiarity with WebTMA or CMMS preferred
  • Working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and general maintenance systems preferred
Physical Abilities
  • Comfortable working at heights of up to 50 feet, including on ladders, scaffolding, or elevated platforms
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects and/or equipment
  • Ability to express or exchange ideas verbally and convey detailed instructions accurately and clearly
  • Close visual acuity to perform principal duties and responsibilities
  • Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another
  • Proficient in tasks that involve the use of hands and fingers, such as gripping, manipulating tools, or operating equipment
Working Schedule and Conditions
  • Position requires the ability to be on 24-hour emergency callout
  • Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments, including mechanical rooms, rooftops, and crawl spaces
  • Exposure to temperature extremes, noise, dust, chemicals, and hazardous materials
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required
  • May regularly travel to different LSC locations
  • May be fully reassigned to other LSC locations if necessary
  • May need to work weekends and untraditional hours if necessary
  • This position is classified as an essential employee, which means the individual may be required to report to work during college closures or emergencies to support recovery and reopening efforts.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and at least 3 years of experience
  • Must have valid Texas driver's license and be eligible for insurance coverage
  • EPA Section 608 Certification for handling refrigerants
  • Texas Registered Technician from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree or higher
  • At least 5 years experience in HVAC maintenance and repair
  • Technical certification or Associate Degree in HVAC
  • Experience working in an educational or institutional setting
  • Experience working with building automation systems
Salary

Hiring salary range is: $41,673 - $47,924

Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education.
