University of Colorado Boulder is seeking an HVAC Technician to install, repair and operate campus heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and building automation controls. You will monitor BAS networking, perform maintenance cycles, and coordinate with researchers and facilities teams.

Qualifications

• 3 years experience in HVAC and mechanical trades, including refrigeration.

Responsibilities

Job Summary

Are you an HVAC Professional looking for an exciting careerfeaturing hands-on work? Our Facilities Management (FM) team at CUBoulder encourages applications for a HVAC Technician! This workunit is responsible for the installation, repair, maintenance,modification and operation of Campus’s heating, ventilating and airconditioning (HVAC) systems and building automation systems (BAS)in academic buildings. Most of the Campus’s building HVAC systemsor components are controlled and monitored by the BAS. The BAS is acomputerized network of DDC that monitors and operates the HVACsystems. This position provides analysis, repair, maintenance andoperational management of the HVAC and BAS systems within theUniversity's academic buildings. This position is not required toupsell services or equipment. Who We Are

FM is responsible for the overall physical development andmaintenance of the campus. The mission of the department is toprovide a safe physical environment that promotes the advancementand transfer of knowledge.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

HVAC System and ULTF Inventory Maintenance and MonitoringProgram Analysis and Repair

• Performs journey level analysis and repair of HVAC Systems andassociated equipment. This includes air handling units, VAVsystems, VAV with reheats, dual duct systems, constant volume withreheats, labs with variable fume hood control, constant andvariable flow heating and chilled water systems, Delta P valves,steam systems, chillers, flat plate cooling, cooling towers,boilers (steam and hot water), and process cooling watersystems.
• Perform new installations, maintenance and troubleshooting forthe ULTF monitoring program on campus and perform bi-annual PM onthe ULTF inventory. This includes condenser cleaning, batteryreplacement, filter replacement and troubleshooting door issues forthe ULTF inventory. Assist during emergencies to locate dry ice andback up freezer options for customers. Ensure ULTF monitoringsystem is communicating without deficiencies, performstroubleshooting when required. Verify contact information withresearch community, regularly communicate with lab PrincipalInvestigator (PI) to update information on the Master CustomerContact internal document and the Thermo Scientific website.Regularly review analytics regarding monitoring system performanceto identify patterns and determine the issue root cause.Consistently keep customers updated and informed of potentialissues.

HVAC System Calibration and Commissioning

• Responsible to commission, calibrate, and test all temperaturecontrol components within a building's temperature control systemto maintain optimal system performance and energy savings. This isperformed on a defined cycle within existing buildings. Mayfunction as the lead for Facilities Management when commissioningand calibrating new work installed by a contractor.

Building Automation Systems/Direct Digital Controls

• Responsible to install, troubleshoot and repair all fielddevices of the direct digital control (DDC) systems within abuilding including microprocessor based controllers, wirelesscontrollers, signal conditioners, relays, sensors, thermostats andall related wiring. Responsible to change numeric values,understand basic system programming code and alarm criteria and tomaintain a clear understanding of the BAS within a building.

Refrigeration/Chiller Maintenance and Operation

• Responsible for the maintenance, repair and operation ofchillers, split systems, cold rooms, computer room air conditionersand other related components and systems. Understand alloperational and control sequences, follow trouble shootingsequences, and read related drawings and specifications. Beresponsible for the recovery/reclamation of refrigerants and oilsper the EPA regulations and file accurate paperwork for trackingrefrigerants.

Project Support

• Provide support for projects, which may include small remodelprojects, renewal and replacement projects, large capital projectsand other similar projects. This may include reviewing projectdocuments (drawings, specifications, component submittals andrequests for information) reviewing outage notification requests,performing outages related to projects, performing qualityassurance inspections, attending project walks, performingequipment start up and final commissioning of new project. Theseare not code based inspections, however, certain aspects of codescould be referenced during the inspection.
• Close out work orders and schedule work for the following day.Include closing comments and ensure repair work orders are created.Complete material issues requests and purchase requests to procurematerial needed. Actively participate in safety meetings. Followsafety policies, procedures and guidelines, and adhere to StandardOperating Procedures for assignments and use of equipment.Participate in and complete safety trainings. Report potentialsafety hazards, mistakes, accidents or procedural violations tosupervisor in a timely manner. As an essential services employee,respond to other duties as assigned as needed.

What You Should Know

• This full time, in-person positions work schedule is Monday -Friday from 7:30 am - 4:30 pm. May be required to work weekends,alternate or extended shifts based on department needs.

• The annual salary for this position is $73,130.
• If you have prior state-classified experience in the same classseries as this position, your pay may be set at a higher amount perthe state Step Pay Programimplemented on July 1, 2024.

What We Require

• Must be a Colorado resident and have a valid Colorado driver'slicense to apply.
• 3 years experience in HVAC and mechanical trades work,including experience with refrigeration technology. Appropriateeducation or successful completion of a formalized apprenticeshipprogram will substitute for the required experience on ayear-for-year basis.
