Job summary

The University of Colorado Boulder is seeking an HVAC Technician to install, repair, maintain and operate campus HVAC and building automation systems (BAS) in academic buildings. The role emphasizes hands-on work with a focus on reliability and energy efficiency.

You will analyze and repair HVAC systems, calibrate temperature controls, and manage BAS devices. This is an essential services position with full-time, in-person responsibilities and opportunities to support capital projects and safety

Qualifications

• 3 years experience in HVAC and mechanical trades work.
• EPA Refrigerant Certification required.

Job Summary

Are you an HVAC Professional looking for an exciting career featuring hands-on work? Our Facilities Management (FM) team at CUBoulder encourages applications for a HVAC Technician! This workunit is responsible for the installation, repair, maintenance, modification and operation of Campus’s heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and building automation systems (BAS) in academic buildings. Most of the Campus’s building HVAC systems or components are controlled and monitored by the BAS. The BAS is a computerized network of DDC that monitors and operates the HVAC systems.

This position provides analysis, repair, maintenance and operational management of the HVAC and BAS systems within the University's academic buildings. This position is not required to upsell services or equipment.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

HVAC System and ULTF Inventory Maintenance and Monitoring Program Analysis and Repair

• Performs journey level analysis and repair of HVAC Systems and associated equipment. This includes air handling units, VAV systems, VAV with reheats, dual duct systems, constant volume with reheats, labs with variable fume hood control, constant and variable flow heating and chilled water systems, Delta P valves, steam systems, chillers, flat plate cooling, cooling towers, boilers (steam and hot water), and process cooling water systems.
• Perform new installations, maintenance and troubleshooting for the ULTF monitoring program on campus and perform bi-annual PM on the ULTF inventory. This includes condenser cleaning, battery replacement, filter replacement and troubleshooting door issues for the ULTF inventory. Assist during emergencies to locate dry ice and back up freezer options for customers. Ensure ULTF monitoring system is communicating without deficiencies, perform troubleshooting when required. Verify contact information with research community, regularly communicate with lab Principal Investigator (PI) to update information on the Master Customer Contact internal document and the Thermo Scientific website. Regularly review analytics regarding monitoring system performance to identify patterns and determine the issue root cause. Consistently keep customers updated and informed of potential issues.

HVAC System Calibration and Commissioning

• Responsible to commission, calibrate, and test all temperature control components within a building's temperature control system to maintain optimal system performance and energy savings. This is performed on a defined cycle within existing buildings. May function as the lead for Facilities Management when commissioning and calibrating new work installed by a contractor.

Building Automation Systems/Direct Digital Controls

• Responsible to install, troubleshoot and repair all field devices of the direct digital control (DDC) systems within a building including microprocessor based controllers, wireless controllers, signal conditioners, relays, sensors, thermostats and all related wiring. Responsible to change numeric values, understand basic system programming code and alarm criteria and to maintain a clear understanding of the BAS within a building.

Refrigeration/Chiller Maintenance and Operation

• Responsible for the maintenance, repair and operation of chillers, split systems, cold rooms, computer room air conditioners and other related components and systems. Understand all operational and control sequences, follow troubleshooting sequences, and read related drawings and specifications. Be responsible for the recovery/reclamation of refrigerants and oils per the EPA regulations and file accurate paperwork for tracking refrigerants.

Project Support

• Provide support for projects, which may include small remodel projects, renewal and replacement projects, large capital projects and other similar projects. This may include reviewing project documents (drawings, specifications, component submittals and requests for information), reviewing outage notification requests, performing outages related to projects, performing quality assurance inspections, attending project walks, performing equipment start up and final commissioning of new project. These are not code based inspections, however, certain aspects of codes could be referenced during the inspection.
• Close out work orders and schedule work for the following day. Include closing comments and ensure repair work orders are created. Complete material issues requests and purchase requests to procure material needed. Actively participate in safety meetings. Follow safety policies, procedures and guidelines, and adhere to Standard Operating Procedures for assignments and use of equipment. Participate in and complete safety trainings. Report potential safety hazards, mistakes, accidents or procedural violations to supervisor in a timely manner. As an essential services employee, respond to other duties as assigned as needed.

What You Should Know

• This full time, in-person positions work schedule is Monday -Friday from 7:30 am - 4:30 pm. May be required to work weekends, alternate or extended shifts based on department needs.
• This role is eligible for our Facilities Management Employee Referral Program.

What We Can Offer

• The annual salary for this position is $73,130.
• If you have prior state-classified experience in the same class series as this position, your pay may be set at a higher amount per the state Step Pay Program implemented on July 1, 2024.

What We Require

• Must be a Colorado resident and have a valid Colorado driver's license to apply.
• 3 years experience in HVAC and mechanical trades work, including experience with refrigeration technology. Appropriate education or successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

This position is designated “essential/critical services.” The incumbent is required to respond to requests for work during campus emergencies (snow, wind, rain, flood and any other natural or man-made event) and report to work for regularly assigned shifts during emergency campus closures.
