Job summary

Seattle Public Schools is seeking a skilled Utilities and Telecommunications professional to develop and implement programs that enhance energy conservation in District facilities. The role reports to the Supervisor of Utilities and Telecommunications and involves maintaining boilers, HVAC systems, and EMCS operations across multiple buildings.

You will balance and optimize HVAC performance, advise on energy-efficient practices, and coordinate with electrical contractors during installations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associate's degree preferred.
  • Completion of IUOE Apprenticeship Program or equivalent vocational-technical program and three (3) years Journey Stationary Engineer level experience, or ten (10) years Journey level experience operating building mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Steam Engineer Grade Three Refrigeration Operating Engineer certification.
  • Criminal justice fingerprint and background check.

Responsibilities

  • Services and maintains boilers, heat pumps and related HVAC systems, including pneumatic and low voltage temperature controls; adjusts, calibrates and repairs heating and cooling controls; prepares work orders as needed.
  • Tests, adjusts and balances HVAC systems for CFM requirements and indoor air quality; evaluates systems and recommends improvements; assists in design of electrical and mechanical systems for new buildings and retrofit installations.
  • Develops energy management programs for specific buildings and district-wide use; assists in implementing energy conservation programs; performs building energy audits; advises custodians on efficient operation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Operates the district energy management system (EMCS); modifies host software to improve performance; performs database diagnostics for evaluation and set-up.
  • Coordinates electrical installation with electrical contractors; conducts final adjustments and calibration of automation systems after installation.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections; responds to HVAC problem calls; diagnoses troubles in sensors, field cabinets, or control consoles and determines corrective action.
  • Monitors building energy performance via EMCS; informs operations staff of anomalies; inspects buildings to ensure operation; coordinates schedules with building personnel.
  • Maintains energy use and cost information; provides reports to management and staff; coordinates data entry with clerical staff.
  • Acts as a technical resource to administrators and others in the District; performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
