The Instrument Mechanic installs, repairs, maintains, and adjusts indicating, recording, telemetering, and controlling instruments used to measure and control variables such as pressure, flow, temperature, motion, force, and chemical composition. Tasks include disassembling malfunctioning instruments, examining and testing mechanisms and circuitry for defects, troubleshooting equipment, replacing or repairing defective parts, reassembling instruments, and testing assemblies for conformance with specifications using instruments like potentiometers, resistance bridges, manometers, and pressure gauges. The mechanic inspects instruments periodically, makes minor calibration adjustments, and may adjust and repair final control mechanisms, such as automatically controlled valves or positioners, calibrating instruments according to standards. All duties must comply with safety regulations. Additional duties may be assigned.
The position may require lifting up to 75 pounds, walking, standing for extended periods, bending, pushing, pulling, climbing, and balancing. Significant hand and finger dexterity are required. The environment is generally hazard-free but may include exposure to dust and varying temperatures.
Three to five years in HVAC and instrument control maintenance and repair in an industrial setting is preferred.
