Job summary

UC San Diego is seeking a journey-level HVAC Technician to operate, maintain, and repair complex building systems and controls. You will test, calibrate, diagnose, and repair equipment, including BACnet and Metasys configurations, and communicate actions to prevent malfunctions.

The role requires knowledge of HVAC systems, building codes, and the ability to work independently or in teams in a dynamic campus environment. Strong documentation and problem-solving skills are essential.

Qualifications

• EPA certification required or commitment to obtain within six months of hire.
• Journey-level knowledge and/or experience in HVAC and Building Automation Systems.
• Experience using and maintaining hand and power tools relevant to the job functions.
• Experience performing tests for systems operations and communicating repair needs to supervisor.
• Experience troubleshooting operational problems and making necessary adjustments or repairs.
• Knowledge reading and interpreting blueprints and system diagrams.
• Knowledge of building codes and standards (UBC, CBC, ICC, fire and life-safety codes).
• Solid understanding of engineering fundamentals related to systems and equipment.
• Ability to work independently, in teams and with diverse populations.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a service-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform skilled journey-level duties in operation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of HVAC systems and building automation subsystems.
• Test and calibrate systems, diagnose problems, and initiate/complete fixes.
• Maintain BACnet and N2 architectures; configure Metasys programs using HVAC Pro Software.
• Document corrective actions and communicate necessary adjustments to prevent malfunctions or energy waste.
• Maintain acceptable attendance and participate in ongoing training.
