Job summary

Hamilton Barnes is seeking a High Voltage Design Engineer to act as Owner's representative for HV/MV substation design across the U.S. data center portfolio.

You will lead detailed design, perform engineering studies, and develop standardized templates while coordinating with utilities, EPCs and internal stakeholders. The role requires 7–10 years’ substation experience, strong communication skills, and proficiency with ETAP/SKM/PSCAD/PSSE or CDEGS.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred).
• 7-10 years' progressive experience in substation engineering, ideally with hands-on detailed design experience from a consulting/engineering firm or utility environment.
• Proven track record delivering substation projects from concept through construction and commissioning.
• Strong knowledge of substation physical design, grounding, lightning protection, insulation coordination and protection & control.
• Familiarity with engineering tools such as ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, PSSE or CDEGS an asset.
• Strong understanding of applicable Canadian codes and industry/utility standards, with excellent communication skills across utilities, contractors and internal stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead and review HV/MV substation detailed design (12kV–287kV).
• Perform and review studies: short circuit, load flow, grounding.
• Develop standardized substation templates for rapid deployment.
• Act as Owner's Engineer overseeing consultants and EPCs.
• Support value engineering, procurements, and technical bid evaluations.
• Provide field support through commissioning and energization.
