As the sole HR professional at Ascent Geomatics Solutions, the Human Resources Manager is responsible for leading all HR functions – from talent acquisition and onboarding to compliance, engagement, and strategic planning. This is a hands-on, high-impact role supporting a 50+ person land surveying and engineering firm. This position works in close partnership with ADP TotalSource, our PEO partner, to manage co-employment responsibilities including benefits, compliance and HR support.
Expected Results in the role:
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment regulations.
- Build and maintain a strong pipeline of technical talent including Crew Chiefs, CAD technicians, licensed surveyors and engineers, using all available tools (ADP, LinkedIn, 3 rd party recruiters, etc.)
- Successfully onboard new hires and ensure smooth integration into the company culture.
- Develop and implement best practices for retaining and engaging top talent including but not limited to approaches related to wage and salary structure, pay policies, performance review programs, employee benefit programs and services.
- Ensure all HR policies and procedures are up to date and effectively communicated.
- Support leadership with performance management processes, employee relations, and organizational planning.
Talent Management
- Manage full employee lifecycle: sourcing, recruiting, onboarding, and offboarding.
- Assist and advise on complex or sensitive employee relations issues.
- Monitor employee satisfaction; conduct stay and exit interviews; develop retention strategies.
- Deliver leadership training and support professional development initiatives.
- Act as the subject matter expert and owner of key HR systems and tools – HRIS, PTO tracking system, ATS, performance management system.
HR Operations & Compliance
- Ensure HR policies, practices, and documentation comply with laws and company standards.
- Act as subject matter expert for HR systems: HRIS, PTO tracking, ATS, and performance management.
- Maintain accurate and updated job descriptions across the organization.
- Oversee compensation, benefits, performance review processes, and engagement strategies.
- Manage the Company's SharePoint HR site for accessibility and organization.
- Maintain employee files and HR documentation throughout the entire employee life cycle.
- Collaborate with the Safety Manager on compliance-related matters, workplace safety concerns, and the administration of programs involving safety-sensitive employees.
- Oversee the DISA program for safety-sensitive employees.
Strategic Partnership
- Align HR strategy with company growth goals (e.g., hiring plans, skills gaps, succession planning).
- Provide consultative support to leadership on communication, employee relations, recruitment, compensation, and conflict resolution.
- Evaluate, create, and develop human resource policies and programs; interpret and explain policies, laws, and HR guidelines to employees and management.
- Lead the company’s Affirmative Action Plan Program, ensuring documentation, compliance, and reporting accuracy.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None. This is a solo HR role – the HR Manager is responsible for directly executing all HR functions without the support of additional HR staff.
Required Skills & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices.
- Strong analytical mindset to interpret HR data and translate into actionable insights
- Proficiency in HRIS, ATS, and remote collaboration tools (ADP, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Monday.com, etc.)
- Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence senior leadership.
- Conflict resolution and coaching capabilities.
- High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to be nimble and adapt to an ever-changing environment.
Required Education, Certifications, and Experience:
- Minimum of three years of experience as a Human Resources Manager
- Experience supporting HR in a professional services or technical industry (engineering, surveying, architecture, etc.) strongly preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business , Human Resources Management, or related field
- PHR/SPHR or SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP Highly Preferred
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
- Must have a reliable internet connection and a designated, quiet workspace.
- Must be able to sit and work at a computer for extended periods of time.
Other Need-to-know items:
- Occasional travel may be required for team meetings, trainings , etc.
- Standard work hours are Monday-Friday; some flexibility may be required based on time zones or company needs.
