Job summary

MCHS Family of Services in Redford, MI is seeking a Human Resources Intern to provide administrative and project-based support across recruitment, onboarding, records, training, and compliance. Responsibilities

  • Communicate professionally with applicants, candidates, employees, and partners.
  • Prepare interview materials, offer documents, onboarding forms, and orientation materials.
  • Assist with reference checks and pre‑employment documentation.
  • Maintain confidential personnel, applicant, training, and compliance records.
  • Assist with filing, scanning, organizing, and auditing employee documents.
  • Support HR with tracking licenses, certifications, evaluations, and training requirements.
  • Assist with career fairs, internship partnerships, recruitment events, and community outreach.
  • Conduct HR research on practices, trends, training topics, and compliance.

Description
Position Summary

The Human Resources Intern provides administrative and project-based support to the Human Resources Department at MCHS Family of Services. This internship offers hands‑on experience in several areas of human resources, including recruitment, onboarding, employee records, training, compliance, and general HR administration.

The Human Resources Intern will work closely with members of the HR team while gaining an understanding of human resources practices within a nonprofit organization that provides services to children, youth, adults, and families. The ideal candidate is organized, professional, dependable, and interested in developing a career in human resources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with posting open positions and maintaining job postings on recruitment platforms.
  • Review employment applications and resumes based on established position requirements.
  • Assist with scheduling phone screens, interviews, onboarding appointments, and new‑hire orientation.
  • Communicate professionally with applicants, candidates, employees, supervisors, and community partners.
  • Support the preparation of interview materials, offer documents, onboarding forms, and orientation materials.
  • Assist with completing reference checks and tracking pre‑employment requirements.
  • Help maintain accurate and confidential personnel, applicant, training, and compliance records.
  • Assist with filing, scanning, organizing, and auditing employee documents.
  • Support the HR team with tracking licenses, certifications, evaluations, training requirements, and other time‑sensitive documentation.
  • Assist with new‑hire orientation and employee onboarding activities.
  • Support employee training initiatives, including preparing materials, updating learning content, and tracking completion.
  • Assist with career fairs, internship partnerships, recruitment events, and other community outreach activities.
  • Conduct research on human resources practices, employment trends, training topics, or compliance requirements as assigned.
  • Assist with special projects related to recruitment, employee engagement, retention, policy development, or process improvement.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding employee, applicant, client, and organizational information.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned by the Human Resources Department.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing an associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, Organizational Leadership, or a related field.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information professionally.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Must successfully complete all required background checks and pre‑internship requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous administrative, customer service, office, or human resources experience.
  • Experience working with databases, applicant‑tracking systems, learning‑management systems, or human resources information systems.
  • Familiarity with recruitment, onboarding, training, employee records, or nonprofit organizations.
  • Interest in working within a human‑services or child‑welfare organization.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

The duties of this position are generally performed in a professional office environment. The intern may be required to sit or stand for extended periods, use a computer and telephone, prepare and organize documents, and occasionally lift or move office materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
