Human Resources Generalist

Full Time 5-FT Salaried Exempt Norfolk, VA, US

Salary Range: $55,000.00 To $70,000.00 Annually

MHI Ship Repair & Services is a major marine repair and conversion contractor serving Commercial ship owners, the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command and Maritime Administration and operators worldwide. Our ship yard is conveniently located in the Mid-Atlantic region at the port of Hampton Roads, Norfolk Virginia.

JOB SUMMARY:The HR Generalist supports a variety of human resources functions, with a primary focus on talent acquisition, temporary employee coordination, benefits reconciliation, employee engagement, HR reporting, and compliance. This position serves as a resource to employees and managers, helping ensure HR processes are administered accurately, consistently, and in accordance with company policies and applicable employment laws.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Serves as the primary recruiter for full-time and temporary positions, managing the full recruitment lifecycle, including job postings, candidate sourcing and screening, candidate communication and offers.
• Assist with temporary employee on boarding and serve as a point of contact for resolving onboarding, timekeeping, and other issues.
• Review and reconcile benefit carrier invoices and partner with the Finance department and benefit providers to research and resolve discrepancies.
• Process and respond to unemployment claims.
• Administer and maintain employee referral, recognition, and employee engagement programs.
• Coordinate the random drug and alcohol screening program, including Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements.
• Prepare and maintain Excel reports, HR metrics.
• Assist with the planning and coordination of employee appreciation and recognition events.
• Maintain working knowledge of company policies, procedures, and applicable employment laws and serve as a resource for employees regarding HR-related questions.
• Assist with maintaining accurate employee records and HRIS information while ensuring confidentiality.
• Support additional HR functions and departmental initiatives as needed

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, along with a minimum of three years of HR Generalist or related human resources experience. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
• HR certification, such as PHR or SHRM-CP preferred
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to prepare, maintain, and analyze HR-related reports and utilize advanced Excel functions as needed.
• Working knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
• Experience with ADP or a comparable Human Resources Information System (HRIS).
• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels of the organization.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
• Ability to exercise discretion, sound judgment, and professionalism.
