Employment Type: Full-Time | Exempt | On-Site

Compensation: $110K–$150K annually

Position Overview

A well-established nonprofit healthcare and support services organization in California’s Central Valley is seeking an experienced Director of Human Resources to lead its multi-site HR and workplace safety functions.

Reporting directly to the President/CEO, the Director of Human Resources will serve as a key member of the organization’s leadership team and oversee all aspects of human resources, including employee relations, recruitment and retention, compensation, benefits, HRIS, training and development, workers’ compensation, compliance and workplace safety.

This position also provides leadership and development to the HR team and works closely with executive leadership and department managers to ensure HR strategies, policies and practices support the organization’s overall mission and operational goals.

Key Responsibilities

Human Resources Leadership & Employee Relations

  • Serve as a strategic HR resource and trusted advisor to executive leadership, managers and employees
  • Provide guidance on employee relations, performance management, corrective action, terminations, workplace investigations, harassment, discrimination and other sensitive employment matters
  • Interpret and consistently administer organizational policies and procedures
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal and California employment laws and regulations
  • Partner with legal counsel on employment and personnel matters when appropriate
  • Identify organizational risks and recommend proactive HR solutions

Recruitment, Selection & Retention

  • Oversee recruitment and selection activities across the organization
  • Partner with management to identify staffing needs and develop effective recruiting strategies
  • Oversee new hire, onboarding and internal transfer processes
  • Analyze workforce and staffing trends to support organizational planning
  • Develop strategies focused on attracting, engaging and retaining qualified employees
  • Support managers with workforce planning and staffing needs analysis
  • Develop, administer and evaluate organizational compensation programs
  • Advise leadership regarding compensation adjustments, salary increases and performance evaluation guidelines
  • Monitor market compensation and benefit trends and provide recommendations to executive leadership
  • Serve as an HR resource to Finance regarding payroll compliance and applicable labor laws
  • Oversee administration and communication of employee benefit programs
  • Partner with Finance in evaluating and procuring competitive benefit offerings
  • Oversee leave-of-absence and paid-time-off administration

HRIS & Reporting

  • Oversee the organization's HR information system and ensure employee data is accurate and maintained appropriately
  • Develop HR reporting capabilities to support daily operations and strategic workforce planning
  • Utilize HR data and analytics to identify trends and support leadership decision-making
  • Ensure confidentiality and integrity of employee records and HR information

Training & Development

  • Oversee new employee orientation and onboarding programs
  • Develop and coordinate ongoing HR and workplace safety training
  • Provide coaching and professional development support to managers and employees
  • Ensure required employee and management training is completed and properly documented
  • Oversee workers’ compensation programs, claims and associated costs
  • Provide guidance regarding case management, return-to-work considerations and cost containment
  • Monitor workers’ compensation vendors for service and performance
  • Partner with appropriate internal stakeholders to identify and mitigate workplace risk
  • Lead, supervise, coach and develop the Human Resources team
  • Establish departmental priorities and ensure appropriate staffing and coverage
  • Manage and resolve HR departmental issues
  • Oversee departmental budgets and resources
  • Hire, develop and evaluate HR team members
  • Foster a responsive, professional and service-oriented HR function

Workplace Safety & Compliance

  • Oversee organizational workplace safety programs and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements
  • Maintain current safety policies and procedures
  • Oversee the organization’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP)
  • Lead or participate in organizational safety committees
  • Monitor safety performance indicators and implement corrective actions as appropriate
  • Conduct or oversee periodic workplace safety inspections across multiple locations
  • Maintain current knowledge of OSHA and other applicable federal, state and local workplace safety regulations
  • Ensure employees and managers receive required workplace safety training
  • Participate in organizational emergency preparedness planning
  • Maintain current emergency and disaster preparedness plans and required documentation
  • Coordinate emergency and disaster drills
  • Partner with internal departments and external agencies as appropriate
  • Ensure appropriate follow-up training and corrective action following drills or assessments
  • Support preparedness for regulatory, accreditation and safety inspections

Additional Leadership Responsibilities

  • Manage HR-related projects from planning through implementation
  • Participate in organizational committees and special projects
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with executive leadership, Finance and department leaders
  • Maintain the highest standards of confidentiality, professionalism and integrity
  • Perform additional leadership responsibilities as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive human resources management experience, including experience in a senior or upper-management HR capacity
  • Broad HR experience across employee relations, recruitment, compensation, benefits, compliance, training and organizational development
  • Working knowledge of federal and California employment laws and regulations
  • Experience managing or overseeing workplace safety programs
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing HR professionals
  • Strong understanding of organizational and business operations
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Experience

  • HR leadership experience within healthcare, nonprofit, hospice, senior living or another highly regulated environment
  • Experience supporting a multi-site organization
  • Experience with Paycom or a comparable HRIS platform
  • Knowledge of workers’ compensation and workplace safety programs
  • Experience interacting with regulatory or accreditation requirements
  • Advanced HR certification such as SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or SPHR is a plus

This is a full-time, exempt, on-site position based in Modesto, California. The position generally works a regularly scheduled 40-hour workweek with additional time as necessary to support organizational needs.

Salary: $110K–$150K annually
