Job summary

Scion Nonprofit is seeking a hands-on Human Resources Manager to oversee a broad range of HR functions in California. You will manage onboarding, benefits, HRIS, compliance, and employee relations, ensuring an excellent employee experience while maintaining policy adherence.

The ideal candidate brings 2–3+ years of HR experience, strong knowledge of California laws, and the ability to handle the full lifecycle independently in a fast-paced nonprofit environment.

Qualifications

  • 2–3+ years of full-cycle HR experience.
  • Experience supporting all areas of HR: onboarding, benefits, HRIS, compliance, employee relations, HR operations.
  • Strong knowledge of California employment laws and compliance.
  • Experience using HRIS and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • High level of professionalism, discretion and confidentiality.
  • Positive, approachable personality with strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day HR operations and be the primary HR contact for employees.
  • Administer the full employee lifecycle including onboarding, offboarding, orientation, and documentation.
  • Respond to questions regarding policies, benefits, leaves, payroll coordination, and HR procedures.
  • Administer benefits, enrollments, life events, and open enrollment.
  • Maintain and manage HRIS records with accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Ensure compliance with California employment laws and organizational policies.
  • Partner with leadership on employee relations, performance management, and best practices.
  • Maintain personnel files and required compliance documentation.
  • Support recruitment, background checks, new hire paperwork, and onboarding logistics.
  • Assist with HR reporting, audits, policy updates, and process improvements.
  • Foster a welcoming, service-oriented HR experience for faculty, staff, and the school community.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Director of Finance & Operations, the Human Resources Manager will oversee a broad range of HR functions, including employee relations, onboarding, benefits administration, HRIS management, compliance, performance support, and general HR operations. The successful candidate will serve as the primary HR resource for employees, ensuring an exceptional employee experience while maintaining compliance with California employment laws and organizational policies. The ideal candidate is proactive, organized, approachable, and thrives in a people-focused environment. While previous management titles are not required, candidates should have hands-on experience managing the full employee lifecycle independently.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day Human Resources operations and serve as the primary HR contact for employees.
  • Administer the full employee lifecycle, including onboarding, offboarding, orientation, and employee documentation.
  • Respond to employee questions regarding policies, benefits, leaves, payroll coordination, and HR procedures.
  • Administer employee benefits, enrollments, qualifying life events, and annual open enrollment.
  • Maintain and manage HRIS records, ensuring data accuracy and confidentiality.

  • SHRM-CP, PHR, or similar HR certification is a plus.
Compensation

$110,000 annual salary plus a comprehensive benefits package.
