A leading university in California is seeking a Compensation Analyst to develop and maintain compensation programs. This role involves analyzing HR data, ensuring competitive compensation practices, and supporting employee engagement across campuses. Compensation Analyst
Primary Purpose
Under the direction of the Director of HR Operations, this position serves as a strategic partner responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining compensation programs while also analyzing and interpreting HR data to support workforce operations. The role ensures internal equity, market competitiveness, and compliance with regulations, while also providing data-driven insights to enhance talent management, employee engagement, and organizational effectiveness across three campuses. Responsible for providing HR Operational Support, as a member of the HR OPS team.
Essential Functions
Compensation: Administers base pay, incentive, and recognition programs in alignment with the University’s compensation philosophy. Conducts market research and recommends strategies to ensure competitive and compliant compensation practices. Manages job evaluations, classifications, salary adjustments, and hiring ranges through benchmarking and market pricing. Leads the annual salary planning process and prepares compensation reports for senior leadership. Oversees compensation systems and data integrity, ensuring alignment with employment laws and industry standards. Mentors HR staff and sets standards for compensation-related data in HRIS systems. Operations: Utilize the data in HR systems including PeopleAdmin, Banner, and EPAF , ensuring accurate data and resolving access or processing issues. Collaborates with HR Business Partners to support employee lifecycle processes from onboarding to offboarding. Participates in recruitment processes and advises on job postings and application errors. Utilizes HR analytics tools to extract insights and support continuous improvement in HR practices. Conducts research on HR trends and best practices, contributing to special projects and organizational development initiatives. Serves as a subject matter expert and collaborative partner across all three campuses to promote consistency and equity in HR operations. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, or related field. (Two (2) years of full-time experience in the same/similar position is equal to one (1) year of completed post-high school education coursework). Three (3) years of direct compensation experience with at least two (2) years progressively responsibility in compensation role. Three (3) years of experience demonstrating proficiency in Excel and hands-on use of HRIS and compensation tools.
Preferred Qualifications
CCP (Certified Compensation Professional or progress toward certification. Masters Degree. Comprehensive understanding of compensation related principles, practices, and regulatory requirements. Strong expertise in job analysis and position classification including job evaluation, market pricing, and internal equity assessment. Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work at all levels of management. Strong ability to consult stakeholders regarding equity, salary setting and position description development. Advanced knowledge of compensation and other human resources business principles. practices and procedures. Strong project management skills Excellent innovative, analytical, and diagnostic skills and practical thinker. Extensive Excel skills in manipulating large spreadsheet and managing data Strong ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Exceptional attention to detail. Ability to partner with internal constituents to ensure proper buy-in for changes and enhancements. Strong organizational skills: ability to multi-task and plan work to meet deadlines, strong attention to detail. Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting. Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.
Work Schedule
Duties performed during standard business hours, additional time may be required to meet business needs or deadlines.
