In this full-time, non-exempt role (3-year term limit), you will help keep essential HR operations and recurring finance support running smoothly for the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) in Charlottesville, VA. Compensation falls in the $28.13/hour to $31.11/hour range based on experience, and SELC is a PSLF-eligible employer.
You will work in a position with access to confidential Human Resources and Finance information, reporting to the Director of Human Resources with a dotted line to the Director of Finance. The role requires successful completion of a criminal background check, and all employees are required to reside in the region.
What you’ll do
- Administer SELC’s workers’ compensation policy, including tracking required provider panel postings.
- Support employee benefits administration, including open enrollment and coordination for the anniversary appreciation program.
- Assist with payroll-related processes, including transportation incentives, reimbursements, and tracking payroll adjustments.
- Coordinate onboarding and offboarding, handling pre-hire paperwork and partnering with the IT department.
- Compile and distribute employee communications and staff updates.
- Maintain employee records and process personnel changes in the HRIS.
- Respond to employment verification requests and support HR document management.
- Track compliance training, labor law postings, and HR compliance deadlines.
- Coordinate HR training initiatives, including interview scheduling, candidate travel, and other departmental projects.
- Work with the AP Coordinator to process HR-related invoices.
- Create and maintain project codes, ensuring records are accurate across accounting systems, time-tracking systems, and related tracking files.
- Schedule internal and external meetings and take minutes, as necessary.
- Organize and maintain Finance documents in SharePoint.
- Provide light administrative support to the Director of Human Resources and the Director of Finance, including support for year-end processes, surveys, Board subcommittee support, and other administrative tasks.
What you bring
- Minimum 1 year of work experience in a professional office setting.
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- High proficiency with Microsoft Office, including advanced word processing in Word and formatting and formulas in Excel.
- Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat, including editing, combining, compressing, and organizing PDF documents.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with a commitment to complete and careful work.
- Ability to adapt quickly, proactively learn new tasks, and operate effectively across different environments.
- Strong reliability, punctuality, and time management, including prioritizing under tight deadlines.
- Ability to uphold strict privacy standards and protect sensitive information.
- Strong independence and follow-through, including initiative across teams and varying levels of direction.
