Job summary

The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) seeks a Legal Administrative Assistant II in Asheville, NC to join our administrative team. This role supports attorneys with court filings, research, calendar management and office operations, reporting to the Regional Administrator.

SELC offers a hybrid work model with remote work up to two days per week. This is a full-time, non-exempt position requiring a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and at least two years of litigation support experience, plus

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years of litigation support experience.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; aptitude for learning legal software.
  • Ability to navigate Adobe Acrobat for editing PDFs.
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to work independently and in teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Provides legal support to SELC attorneys, including filings in state and federal courts, and research tasks.
  • Supports administrative tasks for the Forest Program, including budget tracking, scheduling, and meeting planning.
  • Maintains files (pleadings, transcripts, memos, correspondence) and calendars court deadlines.
  • Assists with preparations for depositions, mediations, hearings, and trials.
  • Collects and reviews documents from public records requests and writes summaries.
  • Prepares memos, reports, and fact sheets for legal proceedings and policy work.
  • Assists with PowerPoint presentations for internal and external presentations.
  • Communicates with experts, supports retainers and tracks invoices.
  • Arranges travel and assists with expense coding.

Job description

The Southern Environmental Law Center(SELC)is seeking aLegal Administrative Assistant IIin ourAsheville, NCoffice. This individual will join ouradministrativeteam and report to ourRegional Administrator. TheLegal Administrative Assistant IIwillhave a full range of legal support responsibilities, including court-related filings and research tasks. In addition, the legal assistant mayassistwith various administrative duties to ensure efficient and well-organized office operations.This is an excellent opportunity to joina highly successful, nationally recognized organization that is effectively addressing some of the most pressing and challenging environmental issues throughout the South and the nation.

SELC has a hybrid work model that offers employees flexibility to workremotely up totwo days per week.This is a full-time, non-exemptposition.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provides legal support to SELC attorneys, which may include preparing andsubmittingfilings in state and federal courts, utility commissions, and before federal and state agencies; researching local court rules; proofreading and editing legal documents; preparing attachments and exhibits; and supporting otherlitigation relatedtasks.
  • Contributes to administrative support for SELC’s Forest Program, includingassistancewith budget tracking, meeting scheduling and note-taking, conference registration, and team retreat planning. Directly supports SELC’s Forest Program director.
  • Mantains files including pleadings, transcripts, memos, and correspondence;computes andcalendarscourt deadlines.
  • Assistswith the logistical and evidentiary preparations for judicial and administrative proceedings (including depositions, mediations,hearings,and trials).
  • Assistsin the collection and review of documents and records obtained through public records requests, including writing summaries or memos.
  • Performs factual research and synthesizes information into clear, well-organized memos, reports, and fact sheets for use in legal proceedingsand policy work.
  • Assists with PowerPoint presentations for both internal and external presentations.
  • Communicates with experts,assistswith retainer agreements, andsubmitsand tracks invoices.
  • Arranges travel;assistswith coding expenses.
  • Plans and coordinates meetings and events, including reservations,logistics, and setup/breakdown support.
  • Provides general administrative support which includes printing, copying, scanning, mailing, andassistancewith scheduling meetings and other events.
  • Participates in and takes notes during conference calls and meetings as needed.
  • Helpsrespond toinquiries from the publicfor legalassistanceor representation, as needed.
  • Assistwith backup coverage across the legal assistant team.
  • Assistswithrotatingkitchenduties.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years of litigationsupportexperience.
  • High levelofproficiencywith Microsoft Office applications, includingadvanced word processing skills in Word,formattingand formulas in Excel spreadsheets, and creating professional Power Point presentations.Demonstrated aptitude for learning legal-specific software.
  • Ability to efficiently navigate Adobe Acrobat, including editing PDFs.
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills.
  • Highly dependable and punctual.
  • Ability to work well both independently and within several different teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines.
  • Cheerful outlook and enthusiasm for both administrative support and substantive tasks.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Someknowledge of, and/or an advanced degreein,Public Lands Management, Forestry, Wildlife Biology, or related scientific disciplines.
  • Experience withNetDocs,e-discoverysoftware, and / or federal litigation support are a plus.

Compensation & Benefits:

SELC offers salaries competitive with other leading environmental nonprofits nationally and provides an excellent benefits package.The wage range for this full-time and nonexempt position is $27.89/hour – $33.32/hour, based on experience. The annualized equivalent isapproximately$58,000– $69,300,assuming full-time hours.Actual placement within the range will depend on factors such as relevant experience, education, skills, and internal equity considerations.For more details about our benefits package, please visitour Careers page.
