Job summary

Southern Environmental Law Center seeks a Human Resources and Finance Assistant to join our Charlottesville, VA office, supporting HR and Finance functions with confidentiality and accuracy. The role reports to the Director of Human Resources with a dotted line to Finance, and requires strong MS Office and Acrobat skills.

We offer a hybrid schedule with up to two remote days per week and a focus on diversity and inclusion.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; at least 1 year in a professional office setting.
  • High proficiency with Word, Excel (formulas), and PDF workflows in Acrobat.
  • Strong organization, attention to detail, and ability to manage confidential information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to work across teams.
  • Discretion, initiative, and reliability in a hybrid environment.

Responsibilities

  • Administer HR and Finance tasks, including onboarding, payroll related items, and invoicing.
  • Maintain HRIS records, privacy standards, and confidential documents.
  • Coordinate meetings, take minutes, and support interdepartmental projects.
  • Assist with year-end processes, training coordination, and benefits administration.
  • Organize Finance documents and support vendor coordination and reporting.

The Southern Environmental Law Center(SELC)is seeking aHuman Resources and Finance Assistantin ourCharlottesville, VAoffice. This individual will join ourHuman Resourcesteam and report to ourDirector of Human Resources with a dotted line to the Director of Finance.TheHuman Resources and Finance Assistantwillprimarily function as support for the Human Resources department with recurring tasks in support of Finance operations.This is an excellent opportunity to joina highly successful, nationally recognized organization that is effectively addressing some of the mostpressing and challenging environmental issues throughout the South and the nation.

The ideal candidate will be task-orientedwith the abilityto think critically and work efficiently while taking direction andmaintainingdiscretion. This position has accessto confidentialHuman Resources and Finance informationandrequiressuccessful completion of a criminal background check.

SELC has a hybrid work model that offers employees flexibility to workremotely up totwo days per week.This is a full-time,non-exemptpositionwith a 3-year term limit.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Administer workers’ compensationpolicy;tracking andmaintainrequired provider panel postings.
  • Support employee benefits administration, including open enrollment and anniversary appreciation program coordination.
  • Assistwith payroll-related processes, including transportation incentives, reimbursements, and payroll adjustment tracking.
  • Coordinate onboarding and offboarding activities, including pre-hire paperwork and collaboration withtheITdepartment.
  • Compile and distribute employee communications and staff updates.
  • Maintain employee records and process personnel changes within thehuman resources information system (HRIS).
  • Respond to employment verification requests andsupportHR document management.
  • Track required compliance training, labor law postings, and HR compliance deadlines.
  • Coordinate HR training initiatives, interview scheduling, candidate travel, and other departmental projects.
  • Work withthe APCoordinator to process HR related invoices.
  • Create andmaintainproject codesand ensure records areaccurateand consistent across accountingsystems, time-trackingsystems, andothertrackingfiles.
  • Schedule internal and external meetings and take minutes, as necessary.
  • Organize andmaintainFinance documents in SharePoint.
  • Provide light administrative support to theDirector of Human Resources and theDirector of Finance.
  • Assistwith year-end processes, surveys, Board subcommittee support, and other administrative functions as needed.
Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum 1 year of work experiencein a professional office setting.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • High levelofproficiencywith Microsoft Office applications, including advanced word processing in Word,formattingand formulas in Excel.
  • Proficiencyin Adobe Acrobat across a range of functions, including editing, combining, compressing, and organizing PDF documents.
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail, with a commitment to doing work carefully and completely.
  • Proactively seeks out new knowledge and adapts quickly to new tasks and environments.
  • Highly dependable, punctual, and able to manage time effectively and prioritize under tight deadlines.
  • Upholds strict privacy standards and protects sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, follow through independently, and adapt to different working styles and levels of direction across multiple teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly convey information, actively listen, and build relationships with colleagues grounded in respect.
  • Cheerful outlook and enthusiasm for both Human Resources and Finance related tasks.

SELC offers salaries competitive withother leading environmental nonprofits nationally and provides an excellent benefits package.The wage range for this full-time and non-exempt position is $28.13/hour – $31.11/hour, based on experience. The annualized equivalent isapproximately $58,500– $64,700, assuming full-time hours.Actual placement within the range will depend on factors such as relevant experience, education, skills, and internal equity considerations.For more details about our benefits package, please visitourCareers page .
