Job summary

Pulmonary Associates of Richmond is hiring a full-time Medical Assistant for the Home Sleep Testing (HST) Lab in Mechanicsville, VA. You will perform clinical and administrative tasks, assist with home sleep test units, and support providers in a fast-paced sleep disorder clinic.

Ideal candidates have MA experience in a medical practice, familiarity with EMR systems, and the ability to take vitals and manage patient flow. This position offers competitive hourly pay and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• At least 1 year of MA experience in a medical practice.
• CNA or Certified MA training (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Work daily in the home sleep testing lab.
• Assist with sending out home sleep test units and prepare for next patient.
• Escort patients to the HST hub and help with paperwork.

• Document patient activity accurately in EMR and relay information to providers.

Medical Assistant - HST Lab

Pay: $18.00-$20.00 an hour based on experience

The Position: PAR is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic full-time Medical Assistant to perform clinical and administrative tasks for patients and providers in the Home Sleep Testing (HST) Lab at our Hanover PAR location in the Sleep Disorder Clinic when needed.

Job Responsibilities for the Medical Assistant

• Work in the home sleep testing lab on a daily basis unless requested to cover another medical assistant
• Assist with sending out home sleep test units, cleaning them upon return, and configuring, them for the next patient
• Escort patients into the home sleep testing hub, seat the patient in an exam room and instruct the patient to fill out paperwork
• Instruct the patient on the use of the unit and what to do in the event that they have questions once they are at home
• Answer any immediate questions that the patient may have at the time of set up
• Check the front desk area on a regular basis and take any units back to the HST lab to be downloaded, cleaned, and configured for the next patient
• Room patients for providers in clinic using Allscripts EMR
• Obtain accurate vitals, current medications, history, review of systems, reason for visit, and other items as per clinic workflow expectations
• Drop off patient CPAP machine to Day Techs in control room
• Perform injections (Pneumonia, Flu, TB Testing)
• Perform spirometries and 6-minute walks
• Administer oxygen and nebulizer therapy when needed
• Instruct patients on proper use of inhalers
• Perform flu and strep testing
• Complete provider orders and relay information to patients, to include:
• Procedures such as sleep studies, PFT tests, CT scans, PET scans, etc.
• DME orders for oxygen, nebulizers, fax orders for CPAP machines and supplies, etc.
• Prescriptions through eRX
• Labs
• Referrals to other providers
• Misc. orders, such as Pulmonary Rehab
• Follow up appointments
• Accurately document patient activity, phone calls, etc. in EMR
• Daily duties outside of clinic include:
• Check out patients in AM after overnight sleep study; schedule follow up appointment and second night sleep study
• Respond to healthcare providers' questions and requests (received via fax, EMR message, voice mail, etc.) such as DME companies for CPAP or oxygen set up, physician offices needing patient notes, pharmacies for RX refills, etc.
• Preload and scan patient charts into EMR
• Prep charts prior to office visit by ensuring all recent notes and results are in the chart
• Return patient messages within the deadline established by Administration:
• Rx refills
• Obtain prior authorizations for procedure and medications
• Other items as requested by providers
• Adhere to Pulmonary Associates’ standards of excellent customer service to patients, caregivers, providers, coworkers, and those outside of Pulmonary Associates
• Adhere to HIPAA policies and procedures in order to protect patient privacy and security
• Perform other duties as assigned by provider, supervisor or member of Administration - for example, cross trained to perform patient check in and / or check out during clinic.

Minimum Qualifications for the Medical Assistant

• At least 1 or more years of MA experience, preferably with experience working in medical practice.
• CNA or Certified MA training completion or equivalent education or experience (Preferred).
• EMR systems: 1 year (Preferred).
• Vital signs: 1 year (Preferred).

Physical / Mental Demands:

• During clinic - standing and walking continuously. Outside of clinic - mostly sitting with some walking and standing.
• Manual dexterity for using a computer keyboard, using a mobile device such as an iPad or laptop, and other office machines.
• Manual strength for using a manual blood pressure cuff.
• Ability to carry up to 10 lbs. frequently during clinic.
• Ability to view computer screens for long periods.
• Occasional stress related to workload and physician / patient demands.
• Sitting for long periods of time as well as occasional standing and walking.
