Job summary

Gateway Recruiting seeks an experienced Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Manager for a manufacturing plant. The role leads the HSE program, develops safety and environmental policies, and drives continuous improvement to reduce incidents.

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety or Industrial Safety, plus 2–3 years in manufacturing. CSP is a plus. Strong analysis, leadership, and regulatory reporting skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Safety, or a comparable degree required.
  • 2-3 years experience within the manufacturing industry.
  • CSP Certification desired but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and coordination of activities related to the company’s health, safety, and environmental program.
  • Developing and maintaining safety and environmental programs, policies and procedures that ensure compliance with local, state, and federal rules (OSHA/EPA).
  • Developing and implementing a program to reduce occupational injuries and illnesses with area assessments and investigations.
  • Establishing and maintaining Environmental and Safety Management systems in accordance with ISO 14001/ISO 18001 and reporting on performance.
  • Interfacing with regulatory agencies, insurers, and corporate teams to ensure compliance.
  • Managing plant environmental and OSHA regulatory reporting and recordkeeping requirements.
  • Creating and managing budgets for HSE activities including testing, waste removal, safety equipment, and recognition activities.
  • Leading investigations on non-compliance and root-cause incidents; providing urgent response to operational issues.
  • Leading implementations of team-driven problem solving and site audits to assess regulatory compliance.
  • Driving environmental solutions and process changes to reduce waste streams.
  • Managing workers’ compensation claims and HSE trainings.

Job description

We are seeking a Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Manager with proven experience and ability to identify, reduce and prevent incidents and will own and drive continuous improvement for a manufacturing plant.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Provides leadership and coordination of activities related to the company’s health, safety, and environmental program
  • Developing and maintaining a variety of safety and environmental programs, policies and procedures that will ensure all associates are in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations, including OSHA and EPA standards.
  • Developing and implementing a program to reduce occupational injuries and illnesses, including area assessments, injury investigations and clear, measurable goals.
  • Correcting working conditions, using knowledge of industrial processes, mechanics, chemistry, psychology, and safety standards, develops loss control programs, and devises methods to evaluate safety progress.
  • Establishing, implementing, and maintaining all Environmental and Safety Management systems in accordance with ISO 14001/ISO 18001, reporting to top management on performance, and recommending improvements.
  • Serving as the interface between local, state, and federal regulatory agencies, corporate and any insurance carrier representatives in order to ensure plant compliance.
  • Managing plant’s environmental and OSHA regulatory reporting and record keeping requirements.
  • Creating and managing budgets for HSE activities including consulting and testing, waste removal, safety equipment, safety recognition activities, etc.
  • Leading investigations on environmental non-compliance, safety non-compliance, and root cause incidents and provide urgent response to operational issues.
  • Leading implementations and use of team implemented problem solving.
  • Conducting site audits and evaluating plants’ compliance with environmental regulations and identify areas of improvement.
  • Implementing environmental solutions and drive changes in manufacturing processes/systems that lead to reduction in environmental waste streams.
  • Managing workers’ compensation claims.
  • Leading safety, HSE, and awareness program trainings.
  • Performing other tasks, duties or special projects as directed.
Qualifications/Competencies/Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Safety, or a comparable degree required. May consider combination of degree and extensive experience.

  • Familiarity with statistical analysis and software (Minitab / Cpk & Ppk)
Communication Skills:
  • Possess strong team, leadership, and interpersonal skills enabling you to work with the full range of employees at the manufacturing site.
  • Ability to organize data into presentations for the team members and management.
  • Ability to generate operator instruction sheets, quality alerts, and clear communication forms.
  • Ability to condense complicated processes and data into a clear message for company decisions.
Problem Solving Skills:
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish factual points, and communicate analytical decisions to the team.
  • Must possess a sense of urgency and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to work through hands-on troubleshooting (mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical) with operators and maintenance technicians.
