Job summary

Maine Veterans’ Homes is seeking an experienced Human Resources Manager to oversee HR operations at the Augusta Home, focusing on employee relations, recruitment, performance management, and retention. You will guide leaders, support managers, and ensure compliant HR practices across the campus.

This role supervises the HR Specialist/Coordinator and partners with Home leadership and Home Office HR to deliver people strategies, training, and confidential employee support in a nonprofit,

Qualifications

• Minimum 3+ years of employee relations experience, including investigations and advising managers.
• Strong knowledge of employment and labor laws applicable to Maine and the nonprofit sector.
• Proven ability to coach leaders and manage stakeholder relationships effectively.
• Experience maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive HR data with discretion.

Responsibilities

• Guide leaders through employee relations concerns, investigations, corrective action, and disciplinary processes.
• Coach supervisors on performance management and setting expectations.
• Oversee performance evaluation processes and documentation.
• Partner with leadership on retention and employee engagement initiatives.
• Support recruitment through resume screening, interviewing, and candidate communication.
• Coordinate reference and background checks and onboarding paperwork.
• Assist with recruitment events and maintain job descriptions and recruiting reports.
• Coordinate employee accommodations and maintain confidential HR records.
• Supervise the HR Specialist/Coordinator and provide timely support to staff and managers.
