Job description

HR Compliance & Labor Law
Location Herndon, VA (Hybrid) - Part time Work
Preferred: US Citizenship

The HR Compliance Specialist will be responsible for ensuring the company’s HR practices, policies, and procedures comply with applicable U.S. federal, state, and local employment and labor laws and regulations.
The ideal candidate must have comprehensive knowledge of U.S. employment practices and multi-state labor requirements and be able to identify how legal and regulatory requirements affect HR policies, employee relations, hiring, compensation, benefits, leave, workplace practices, and employee separations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and stay current on changes to U.S. federal, state, and local employment and labor laws.
  • Ensure HR policies and procedures are compliant with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Understand the differences in employment requirements across states and local jurisdictions.
  • Review company practices and identify potential HR compliance risks.
  • Conduct regular audits of employee records, HR processes, and company policies.
  • Ensure appropriate employment documentation, notices, records, and reporting requirements are maintained.
  • Provide guidance to management and HR personnel regarding employment compliance requirements.

  • Support internal and external HR compliance audits and government inquiries.
  • Partner with HR leadership, management, and legal counsel on complex or high-risk employment matters.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality when handling employee and company information.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Compliance, Employment Law, or a related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in HR compliance, HR operations, employee relations, or a related HR function.
  • Extensive knowledge of U.S. federal, state, and local employment and labor laws.
  • Demonstrated experience working with multi-state employment compliance.

  • HR certification such as SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR preferred.
  • Experience working in a government contracting environment is highly desirable.
Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is someone who knows HR compliance—not just HR administration. They should be comfortable navigating employment requirements across different states and jurisdictions, proactively identifying compliance issues, researching regulatory changes, and ensuring that company policies remain legally compliant and consistently applied.
This role requires someone who can stay ahead of changing U.S. employment and labor regulations rather than simply reacting to compliance issues after they occur.
This version makes multi-state labor law expertise a core requirement without cluttering the job description with a list of individual laws.
