Job summary

University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee is seeking an experienced HR Business Partner to provide comprehensive HR support to employees and leaders across campus. You will serve as the primary HR liaison and advise on policies, employment law, and core HR functions.

The role requires collaboration with leadership, data analysis for workforce planning, and the ability to work independently while guiding strategic HR initiatives; a BS in HR/Business or equivalent experience, and SHRM credentials are

Qualifications

  • At least two years of professional experience in one or more HR disciplines.
  • Bachelor's degree in HR, Business, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience as an HR Business Partner or advisor in higher education or complex organizations.
  • Ability to work independently while advising leadership on HR matters.
  • Experience across recruitment, employee relations, and training.
  • Experience analyzing data to support workforce strategy and planning.
  • Knowledge of employment laws such as FMLA and FLSA.
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification coursework or equivalent.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States; no visa sponsorship.
  • I-9 employment eligibility verification knowledge.
  • Cover letter and resume required.
  • Three professional references required for finalist candidates.
  • Criminal background check required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive HR support to employees and leaders across the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.
  • Serve as the primary HR liaison and main point of contact for assigned client groups.
  • Consult on HR policies, procedures, employment law, best practices, and core HR functions.
  • Interpret, advise on, apply, and disseminate complex policies, procedures, and options.
  • Recommend strategies aligned with established objectives and goals.
  • Facilitate and process complex HR transactions and programs.
  • Audit human resources reports for compliance.
  • Develop and implement processes and procedures for employee training, recruitment, compensation, and payroll.
  • Respond to inquiries in person, by email, and through other communication mediums.
  • Relay information to appropriate entities.
  • Contribute to strategic plans and direct staff implementation of initiatives aligned with strategic goals.
  • Collaborate with departmental leadership to develop and implement HR strategies aligned with organizational goals.

Requirements
  • At least two years of professional experience in one or more human resources disciplines
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related field OR equivalent professional experience
  • Experience serving as an HR Business Partner or in a similar advisory role within a higher education institution or other complex organization
  • Ability to work independently while advising and supporting leadership on a broad range of HR matters
  • Experience across multiple human resources disciplines, such as recruitment, employee relations, and training
  • Experience analyzing, interpreting, and/or reporting data to support workforce strategy and planning
  • Knowledge and practical experience applying employment laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines, such as FMLA and FLSA
  • Coursework in Human Resources Management and/or current HR certification, such as SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR
  • Problem-solving experience in employee relations matters
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire; position does not offer visa sponsorship
  • Ability to complete an I-9 employment eligibility verification form

  • Three professional or supervisor references required for finalist candidates
  • Criminal background check required
