Position Summary

WashU’s Research Infrastructure Services (RIS) is seeking a Research Computing Facilitator to support researchers in leveraging advanced computing, data systems, and software to conduct cutting‑edge research across a broad range of disciplines, with a particular focus on human health. This facilitation includes direct user support as well as broader participation in project development and research activities.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides support to scientific researchers and students on complex data workflows, debugging application performance and improving research workflows.
  • Supports researchers and students on existing complex University operating systems, software installation/maintenance and hardware to ensure research project success.
  • Collaborates with engineers and developers to identify complex system data, hardware or software components.
  • Performs complex security analyses of computing systems to ensure data protection.
  • Develops multiple complex project plans to provide timely and accurate technical support to research end‑users.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or combination of education and/or experience may substitute for minimum education.

  • Work Experience: High Performance Computing Environment (4 Years)
  • Skills: Infrastructure Deployment, Software Development, Statistical Software Packages
  • Driver’s License: A driver’s license is not required for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with computational research relating to human health (e.g., genomics, medical imaging).
  • Experience with creating and using virtual machines and software containers (with, e.g., Docker, Singularity, or a similar tool), and/or creating workflows using these tools.
  • Experience in developing research‑focused software applications, particularly using modern software development tools such as version control and continuous integration.
  • Experience with developing data analysis and/or data management pipelines in high‑level scripting languages.
  • Experience with the management or coordination of research software development projects, particularly in an open source/community context.
  • Experience using machine learning and/or artificial intelligence techniques to solve scientific problems (including, e.g., the use of common tools such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras, scikit‑learn, Hugging Face).
  • Training in, or professional experience contributing toward, the development of skills such as research facilitation, conflict negotiation, communication, teamwork, leadership, and/or project management in the context of multidisciplinary research teams.
  • Experience with proposal development and/or coordination.
  • Strong technical and problem‑solving skills, including Linux command line experience and programming experience with a modern language such as R, Python, or C++.

Grade G13 Salary Range

Salary Range $65,900.00 – $112,700.00 / Annually The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
