Job summary

Volunteers of America–Greater New York is seeking a Housing Specialist in the Bronx to help veterans and low-income clients secure permanent housing. The role includes eligibility assessments, developing housing plans, and linking clients with public and private housing options.

You will collaborate with the SSVF program, conduct outreach, track placements, and facilitate workshops to empower clients to maintain housing.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or 60 college credits with two years of related experience in housing placement for low-income/homeless populations.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Clean and valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

• Conduct housing eligibility assessments for all applicable clients.
• Develop linkages with real estate companies and public housing offices.
• Maintain and update listings of permanent affordable housing.
• Facilitate client workshops and sessions to acquire and maintain housing.
• Track placements and perform follow-up with clients in permanent housing.
• Outreach to veterans in the SSVF program and coordinate access to services.
• Screen and assess veterans for SSVF eligibility.

We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the following position:

Position: Housing Specialist

The Housing Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring that clients, particularly veterans enrolled in the program, are housing-ready and connected to permanent housing options. This includes conducting housing eligibility assessments, developing housing plans, and assisting clients in securing housing in both public and private sectors.

Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF), a community-based outreach program, we identify low-income veteran households and connect them with a range of supportive services to promote housing stability and prevent homelessness.

Minimum Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or 60 college credits with two years of related experience in housing placement services for low-income and/or homeless population, or satisfactory combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of federal guidelines for public and private low-income housing required.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Clean and valid driver’s license. Must maintain agency authorized driver’s status.

Housing Specialist Principal Responsibilities

• Conduct housing eligibility assessments of all applicable clients.
• Develop linkages with real estate companies and office of public housing.
• Maintain and update listings of permanent affordable housing.
• Develop and facilitate client workshops and individual sessions on skills and information necessary to acquire and maintain independent permanent housing.
• Track placements and conduct follow-up of clients placed into permanent housing.
• Responsible for conducting outreach to veterans enrolled in the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, ensuring their active participation and access to services, this include home visits or conducting outreach in shelter settings as necessary.
• Support outreach with screening and assessment efforts to identify veterans who may be eligible for SSVF services.
