Job summary

U.S.VETS is seeking a Housing Specialist to assist homeless and at-risk veterans and families in securing and maintaining stable housing under the SSVF program. • Bachelor’s degree in social services or related field is required.
• A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience may substitute for degree.

• Strong oral, written and communication skills.

• Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and Internet.
• Valid driver’s license required and must meet company insurance requirements.

• Complete accurate HMIS data entry and maintain case records.
• Track and report participant progress according to program requirements.

About The Role

The Housing Specialist supports homeless and at-risk veterans and their families in obtaining and maintaining stable housing through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. This role combines housing navigation, landlord engagement, documentation, and supportive services to help participants overcome housing barriers and move toward greater stability and independence.

What You’ll Do

Housing & Participant Support

• Assess participants’ housing needs, barriers, and progress and develop appropriate housing strategies.
• Help veterans and families identify, apply for, and secure safe and affordable housing.
• Support participants in maintaining housing and connecting to community resources and supportive services.
• Coordinate transportation to housing-related appointments, resources, and services as needed.
• Maintain participant confidentiality and uphold professional boundaries.

Landlord & Community Partnerships

• Develop and maintain relationships with landlords, property managers, housing providers, and community agencies.
• Identify available housing opportunities and recruit property owners willing to work with veterans facing significant housing barriers.
• Coordinate with SSVF case managers, VA personnel, and community partners to support participant housing and overall stability.
• Build professional relationships that expand housing options for veterans and their families.

Program Compliance & Documentation

• Conduct rent reasonableness assessments in accordance with SSVF requirements and maintain supporting documentation.
• Obtain required housing and participant documentation for case files.
• Assist with temporary financial assistance payments in accordance with program requirements.
• Complete accurate and timely HMIS data entry and maintain case records.
• Track and report participant progress in accordance with program and funding requirements.
