Job summary

The Town of Chapel Hill is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic to support the Housing and Community Development Department. You will perform maintenance and safety inspections of public housing units, handling plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and appliance repairs as needed, and document work orders.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma or GED, a valid NC driver's license, and at least 2 years' related experience or an equivalent mix of education and experience.

Qualifications

• Valid NC Driver's License.
• Minimum of 2 years of related experience or an equivalent education/experience mix.
• Knowledge of tools in electrical, carpentry, HVAC and plumbing trades.
• Building codes and safety regulations knowledge preferred.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.

Responsibilities

• Completes safety inspections and preventative maintenance of public housing units.
• Performs general maintenance of public housing units including plumbing, HVAC, electrical and appliances.
• Uses a work order system to track and prioritize maintenance requests and document completion.
• Provides notice to residents regarding upcoming work.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Completes safety inspections and preventative maintenance of public housing units


• Performs general maintenance of public housing units, including plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and appliance repairs as permissible


• Uses a work order system to track and prioritize maintenance requests and document completion.


• Provides notice to residents regarding upcoming work.


• Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

• The work requires frequent walking, standing, or stooping, and sitting at a desk or table.


• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs safely.

• High School Diploma/GED


• Valid NC Driver's License


• Minimum of 2 years of experience in a related field OR anycombination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the job

Knowledge of:

• The operation of a wide range of hand tools and equipment in the electrical, carpentry, HVAC, and plumbing trades


• Practices in Federal, State, and Local building codes and safety regulations preferred

Ability to:

• Manage multiple projects and shifting priorities


• Work independently, as well as effectively as part of a team


• Communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, residents, and other stakeholders


• Serve on the departmental on-call rotation


• Work a flexible schedule, including holidays, weekends, and inclement weather, on an as-needed basis
