Summary

This open and continuous announcement establishes a standing register of eligible applicants, which closes on 09/18/2026. The initial cut‑off date for referral of eligible applications will be on or about 06/03/2026, with subsequent reviews every other week or as needed until positions are filled.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Experience: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Screening will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element. Those who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and eliminated. Potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the job elements: Dexterity and Safety, Follow Directions, Handle Weights and Loads, Reliability and Dependability, Special Aptitude – Housekeeping Work, Work Practices. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through national service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience. Note: A full year of work is considered 35‑40 hours per week. Part‑time experience will be credited based on the time actually spent. Applicants wishing to receive credit must indicate clearly the nature of duties and responsibilities and hours per week.

Physical effort: The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment weighing over 50 pounds. The duties require considerable dexterity, hand‑foot‑eye coordination, concentration, and visual acuity to see dirt, dust, and debris.

Working conditions: Work is normally performed indoors with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Some work may be performed outdoors where you may be exposed to varying degrees of heat and cold and inclement weather. PPE may be required when exposure to possible contagious diseases, blood, or bloody secretion is inherent. Care is required to avoid serious injuries such as broken bones when working on ladders or using 30‑100 pound power equipment or handling hazardous materials.

Duties

• Maintain VA facilities for Veterans and their families as part of the patient care experience.
• Work alongside other Veterans who make up 85 percent of the housekeeping staff.
• Perform full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping duties.
• Clean wards, patient rooms, storerooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, shower rooms, and other areas.
• Sweep, mop, scrub (machine) floors, vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture, empty waste baskets, clean light globes and Venetian blinds, wash walls, windows and ceilings by climbing small ladders, refill toilet tissue and towel dispensers, and move furniture.
• Carry out assignments with minimal supervision and address spills quickly.
• Work schedule: full‑time, shift and days off determined based on facility needs.
• Position in the competitive service. Relocation incentives and retention incentives are not authorized.
• Interchange agreements: Employees appointed under 38 U.S.C. 4701(1) or (3) must be serving in a full‑time position without time limit and have served continuously for at least one year to be eligible to convert to Title 5. Some exceptions may apply if you have previously acquired tenure under a Title 5 appointment.
• Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF‑50. The SF‑50 must identify position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (competitive or excepted). More than one SF‑50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held.
