Job description

Summary

This position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of a VA Medical Center. It is under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or a designee. The role includes janitorial and custodial services at the VA Medical Center located in Denver and Pueblo, Colorado.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement on 09/30/2026. Specific length of training or experience is not required, but candidates must provide evidence of training or experience that demonstrates sufficient scope and quality of their ability to perform the duties. Evidence should be supported by detailed descriptions in your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. The initial screen will evaluate a prescribed screen‐out element; eligible applicants will then be rated against the remaining job elements: Dexterity and Safety, Follow Directions, Handle Weights and Loads, Reliability and Dependability, and Special Aptitude – Housekeeping.

Responsibilities
  • Perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping tasks.
  • Clean wards, patient rooms, storerooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, shower rooms, and other areas.
  • Sweep, mop, scrub (machine) floors; vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture; empty waste baskets; clean light globes and Venetian blinds; wash walls, windows, and ceilings; climb small ladders; refill toilet tissue and towel dispensers; move furniture.
  • Carry out assignments with minimal supervision.
Benefits
  • Work schedule: full time or part time. Scheduling determined upon selection.

  • Paid Time Off: 37–50 days of annual paid time, including 13–26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, and 11 paid federal holidays.

  • Childcare subsidy: after 60 days of employment, full‑time employees with a family income below $144,000 may qualify for a subsidy up to 25% of eligible childcare costs (maximum $416.66 per month).
  • Retirement: traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contributions.
  • Insurance: federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care (many programs can be carried into retirement).
  • Physical requirements: continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. Occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment weighing over 50 pounds.
