Summary

These positions are part of the Environmental Management Services Division at the Kansas City VA Medical Center. They report directly to the Housekeeping Supervisor or a designated representative. Employees in these roles perform a full range of janitorial and custodial duties throughout the Kansas City VA Medical Center in Kansas City, MO. Qualifications

To qualify for this position applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Experience of a specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to perform the duties of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Your qualifications will be first evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element—usually question 1 in the online questionnaire. Those who meet the minimum acceptable qualification are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and eliminated. Potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the job elements: Dexterity and Safety, Follow Directions, Handle Weights and Loads, Reliability and Dependability, Special Aptitude – Housekeeping Work, Work Practices.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs such as Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, and other organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to payed employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. A full year of work is considered to be 35–40 hours per week. Part‑time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Job Duties

• This is an open‑continuous announcement.
• The initial cut‑off date for referral of eligible applications will be June 29, 2026; subsequent cut‑off dates are on the 1st of each month.
• Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as‑needed basis until positions are filled.

• The Environmental Services (EVS) Technicians maintain VA facilities for veterans and their families and are essential to the patient care experience.
• As an EVS Technician, you will perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping duties.
• Duties include – but are not limited to: floor maintenance and wall washing; cleaning doors, doorframes, baseboards, corners, and edges; stairwells; using pressure washers and heavy industrial powered equipment; emptying trash and wastebaskets; replacing liners; cleaning restrooms, bathrooms, and shower rooms; ensuring they meet acceptable standards; replenishing supplies of paper towels, toilet paper, hand sanitizers, and soap in all areas with dispensers; defrosting and cleaning patient‑care refrigerators and ice machines; cleaning stainless steel on storage instrument cabinets and counters; elevators in lobbies, wards, diet‑kitchens, and nurse utility rooms; cleaning and/or replacing needle boxes.

• Work Schedule: Facility is open 24 hours; shifts will be determined by the needs of the Service upon selection.
• Physical Requirements: Continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. Occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. Requires dexterity, hand‑foot‑eye coordination, concentration, and visual acuity to see dirt, dust, and debris.
• Working Conditions: Work is normally performed indoors with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Some work may be performed outdoors, exposing workers to varying degrees of heat and cold and inclement weather.
• PPE may be required in some circumstances as exposure to possible contagious diseases, blood, and bloody secretion are inherent to this position.
• Care is required to avoid serious injuries (e.g., broken bones) when working on ladders or using power equipment weighing 30–100 pounds or handling hazardous materials.
